We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Duenas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my brand was really solely only about makeup. I taught myself how to do makeup when I was like in 5th grade. I use to watch youtube videos all day, I really enjoyed doing my own makeup and was always told to become a makeup artist. I would do all my friends makeup for weddings, dances, etc. all the time but something about doing makeup on other people and that was it did not appeal to me as much as I thought it should, It just wasn’t enough for me. Furthermore, In my makeup process I always struggled with finding lashes that I liked and enjoyed wearing. Every single time I picked out a lash I always felt like it wasn’t long enough, wispy enough, nor full. I started stacking the Ardell lashes together to create my own lashes. I would cut lashes and glue different pieces to my eyes to make the lash that I wanted. It wasn’t until I was probably 16 years old, I would complain about how I didn’t like the lashes in the stores, my mom asked, “why don’t you start selling lashes?” That idea literally lit my whole brain up! It took me awhile to actually sit down and learn how to get into the business aspect and how to do It so I didn’t start my business and have it up and running until I was 20, in April 2019! But here I am now, selling lashes, and many more products!
What should our readers know about your business?
A little more about my business.. I definitely take pride in being a black and latina owned brand! I notice that a lot of makeup brands cater to certain shades and I want mine to be every shade there is. So i definitely dedicate my brand to being versatile and universal for all. From the 10 different shades of eyebrow pomade (plus the many more shades of different products Ill be releasing) to the models you see on my site/ promoting my products. I want men and women to come onto my site and be able to find their shade and shop for every product they need and actually feel welcomed!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting from out of town and they’ve never been to Arizona, Id definitely take them to hike my favorite trails like North mountain, then Id take them to Nekter, my favorite healthy juice bar! We’d get the acai bowls because those are my fav! Then we’d hit up @Glendalegirls in Glendale for some cute clothes and vintage by @everythingbymars. After that i’d take them to my favorite jewelry spot @thejoyeriadiaz for some gold because their gold is something serious!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout the city of Phoenix along with the whole Arizona state for supporting my brand. At first I was super nervous because I wasn’t sure if I would get the support/customers but everyone really showed out for me and continues to. I cant even be mad at the people who don’t support because I have WAYYYY more genuine people who do and always send me kind words and prayers. I feel very blessed and Its nice to know that majority of my city is rooting for my success. I. definitely would never forget who goes out their way to support me its so amazing that i’ve cried a couple times!
