We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Estrada and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been interested in the creative and artistic realm, but with all the hobbies that I have tested and tried, photography has been something that has have stuck long enough. I never really thought about having an audience over my work, until I had some family and friends, and some social media to give me a push to, “why not give it a try?”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well I started as a hobbyist photographer, then unto Portraiture. I have a lot of people telling me they love my work and has always encouraged me that maybe I can do more with my work. So I started ways to how I can make some money with my hobby while also following my faith, that led me to do weddings. There has been a lot of challenges for me, because I’m confident on my work as a photographer, but the business aspect was difficult because I know nothing of it when I wanted to start. I overcome the challenges with asking other business owners and allowing me to shadow and ask them questions about their growth in their work. The lesson I learned thats very impactful for me is connecting with people. I was once a very introverted person, who have a difficult time socializing, and through out my journey in my work, it has helped me grow and it blessed me in many ways! I would like the world to know not really just about my skills of my work but I couldn’t have done what I have on what God has gifted me, and love to share that to people who appreciate the value of my craft. I love to be in the shoes of my clients and empathize on their blessings and love to capture that into a frame that could last and be shared for generations to come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first thing I would have in mind in Arizona Breweries, and night life. I enjoy a a conversation with some brews along with bar foods with flying colors! I would also take them to some of my habitual food places that I visit, or things I would love to share that I do on a regular, along with Arizonas outdoors from flagstaff , to Payson to even Tucson!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My very first and foremost inspiration to photography is was my Ex fiancé, Thao Ha. Despite of something personal, she was the reason to why I love photography. It was just a random whim that I wanted to be a “boyfriend photographer” that lead to do what I love today.
I had many friends as well who has encouraged me to pursue something within the realm of photography from friends and family to pursue something in photography.
JJ, owner of Intrinsic Imagery, also one of my friend and mentor. For someone who has been in the photography business for so long, was able to see the worth of my work with a higher value.
