We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Nemeyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
It’s very easy to feel discouraged when you create/release art. I’ve found (I think by trial and error) that one should never make any type of art for the sole purpose of pleasing others/meeting others’ expectations. My opinion, for better or worse – is that you should “keep going” if you are 1) happy, and 2) you’re pushing yourself to do something different/new.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the songwriter/singer for a Washington, DC – based band called Color Palette. I like to think that our releases achieve a unique blend of organic and electronic elements that fall somewhere in the indie dream pop space (that’s the intent, anyway). Songwriting and collaborating with others is my favorite thing to do – there’s something really special about it.

The music industry is tough – there’s a lot of highs, and a lot of lows. The main lesson I’ve learned along the way is to not make music to meet the expectations of others. Make the music you want to make. And the rest will sort itself out.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So many spots to choose from! I would certainly take my friend to see some live music (duh) – so here are my favorite spots in the city: Pie Shop, 930 Club, Pearl Street Warehouse, Union Stage, Black Cat, DC9, Songbyrd, and Anthem. Best dive bar: The Raven (Mount Pleasant). Best pizza: Vace (Cleveland Park). Best outdoor space: Rock Creek Park. Best museum: National Air and Space Museum.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Kyle Downes. Kyle, an engineer and producer, and I have been collaborating for over a decade. He’s a constant source of inspiration and encouragement – he always pushes me (and anyone he works with) to get the best take, or the best tone.
