Meet Jen Collins | Med Spa Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I never had a dream to own my own businesss. The opportunity came about and certain factors pushed me. Now that I am a business owner, I would never go back. I love being able to curate my business based on my patient needs and change processes when they aren’t working. I love the flexibility and creativity it allows. Being able to make the decision in hiring the best of the best is intricate in ensuring the best patient care and satisfaction. Best of all I love finding ways to honor my patients and give them the best care possible is why I love being a business owner!

What should our readers know about your business?
My healhcare career started in highschool in a small farm community in Humboldt Iowa. It was here that I took advantage opportunity to take a class to get my CNA certificate. I always felt that healthcare and helping others had a strong pull on me and felt like my passion. I worked in a nursing home and hospital setting while I finished high school and while in college. I didn’t decide immediately to enter nursing school, but just couldn’t deny that this was the best path for me. I went to a small private nursing school in Waterloo Iowa.
After I graduated I moved to Kansas City. My first job was intense and scary as I took care of people who were awaiting, and have received heart transplants. These patients were chronically sick and had pacemakers and even assist devices that worked like their heart. I gained so much cardiac and nursing knowledge. I decided after 3 years to move on and do travel nursing as it just made sense for me personally at the time. I traveled to Washington DC where I had college friends, and worked with cardiac and neuro patients. My other travel experience took me to San Diego, LA, and Denver. As a traveler you get put in may situations, and you have to figure it out. It pushed me to learn more than I ever could imagine. While in Denver, I decided to become staff and trained in the Cardiac ICU where I experienced far more than I could ever imagine.
A relationship and future husband brought me to Arizona where I worked at Mayo clinic. I was in the float pool so I worked all floors from cancer, to cardiac, med surg, pre and post op, and really all areas! While at Mayo I decided I should use my free time to further my career and get my nurse practitioner.
I did my clinical hours in cardiology at Mayo and John C Lincoln and the majority of my hours in primary care at DeRosa Medical. I worked alongside amazing people, the experience was immeasurable. This is also where I started my hormone journey being trained by the best, Angela DeRosa, DO. I worked at DeRosa medical for 6 years.
It was while working at DeRosa Medical that I decided to learn aesthetics. I didn’t really even know what I was getting into. It was a scary new world and I was very green. I wasn’t even sure what I would do with this certificate. I didn’t have a plan. Dr. DeRosa approached me to see if I would like to use a room in the clinic to practice. This is when You’re Beautiful Aesthetics was born. She allowed me to market to our clients. This is how I got started. My patients figured they trusted me with their medical affairs so they trusted me with their face, and this is how I learned!
With the Dissolve of DeRosa Medical, I had to decide what my next step was. Because I already had my business, You’re Beautiful Aesthetics established, I decided to go all in and also offer hormones in my own practice. A number of my loyal patients came with me. This was 7 years ago now. I have an amazing team, including Nurse practitioner, Christina Johansen. Christina and I had met at Mayo with our former nursing careers, and she also worked at DeRosa Medical, gaining the same hormone knowledge. The addition of Christina has been amazing, she has also blossomed into an amazing aesthetics provider and has acted as a practice manager, helping my practice grown in many ways.
I am excited to see where we can go from here!
I
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I have visitors come to Arizona I have a list of must!
Cave Creek: this makes me feel at home, even though Cave Creek is nothing like my home town. I love the country, vinatge feel and how nice everyone is. I would take them to buffalo chips and experience the BBQ and bull riding, and we would catch brunch at a local diner where they have live music. We would maybe catch a hike or a horseback riding trip near Elephant mountain
Downtown to some authentic mexican restrants
Oldtown for some history and posh areas
Hiking and mountain biking and just enjoying the amazing weather and beautiful sunsets!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a great deal of my sucess to the first practice I worked at as an NP. I completed my clinical hours with the former DeRosa Medical practice, who’s focus was primary care and hormones. There I had the amazing opportunity to learn from the best, Angela DeRosa DO and many other amazing NPs, PAs and Physcians. I gained my knowledge in many disease processes with the primary care aspect, and received a wealth of invaluable hormones knowledge that has guided me to where I am today. Dr. DeRosa also encouraged my aesthetic career, as she encouraged me to start my aesthetic practice in her clinic. I still follow and continue to learn from Dr. DeRosa, as she has a big platform for hormone education. I am forever grateful.
