We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Lei and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business came out of a need for good quality wearable jewelry in my own life. I have always loved jewelry but I workout most days and I have two children that I’m constantly running around with so putting on jewelry everyday wasn’t feasible. I was afraid of breaking my expensive jewelry while doing CrossFit but when I wore cheaper jewelry it would turn from shiny gold to a dull silver fast. The solution was to make my own gold filled jewelry on stretchy string. I am able to wear my jewelry to workout classes since it it comfortable and I don’t have to worry about the gold changing since it is tarnish resistant.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a small jewelry business I run from my home. Everything I make is hand made by me, usually with my children close by. I take great pride in what I make and I love each piece I send out. Everything I make I customized to each customer. I am really proud of the quality of jewelry I make, it is gold filled or sterling silver and is made to wear daily. Making my jewelry really came from my love of jewelry but also my love of working out. It was hard for me to find jewelry to wear all day since I workout most days. I’m pretty low maintenance so I wanted jewelry that I didn’t have to take on and off, could get wet, didn’t tarnish, and was comfortable to wear to my CrossFit classes.
It has really been an amazing and fun journey. I love to be creative and work with my hands. I’d say it has been mostly easy, but like I said I am very small and still trying to get my name known.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What a fun question! This is such a great area to visit, especially in fall + winter. My go to restaurant is Flower Child, I could eat there every day. I dream about their olive oil cakes. We would have to get in a workout and I love CrossFit, I also love yoga. I have been going to Yoga Six lately. Right by Yoga Six is Kaleidoscope Juice that has my absolute favorite smoothie ever called the Flu Shot smoothie.
Another great thing would be taking a bike ride or run down the beautiful Greenbelt and dinner at Culinary Dropout in Scottsdale Quarter.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to my two children. I have an amazing daughter and son who give me encouragement and inspiration to make my jewelry. My daughter is has helped me design some of my bracelets and has a bracelet named after her. She has a great imagination and loves wearing the bracelets I make.
