We had the good fortune of connecting with Jim Pavett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jim, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a professional Recording studio owner/engineer/producer for 20 + years, I kept having encounters with unhelpful salespeople in my field when I needed a solution to move forward. Unable to find answers to my tough questions, I grew frustrated from typically knowing more about the products than the salespeople did. Turning to pro audio magazines for help only led to product shootouts and reviews that almost never expose important shortcomings. I always had to talk directly with the manufacturers of equipment to get any answers. I took notice of this knowledge gap between seller and buyer and decided to do something about it. Out of it came two business. Pure Wave Audio, established in 2004, which concentrates on design, consulting and sales of boutique recording gear and The Studio Edge Pro Audio Recording Series; Online courses about how to build a studio, the physics of sound, selecting gear, the anatomy of drums and how to record them etc. These two business focus on helping the client become more knowledgeable about their industry or passion and achieve the audio results they are envisioning.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career has been rich and diverse as it comes. I started with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering. While in college I was touring as a professional drummer. I went straight out of college into owning a full commercial recording studio (Allusion Studios) which has brought so many interesting projects and accolades into my life. Projects I have worked on included a Grammy nomination, a Native American Award, Tucson’s Drummer of the Year award, Superbowl commercial, many major movies like Pacific Rim, The Source Code, tons of TV shows like Heartland, Bull, The Terminal List, CBS Sports, books on tapes with astronauts and senators, major actors including George Clooney and Vera Farmiga. I have drummed on many albums and songs with major artist Billy Gibbon (ZZ Top), Ted Nugent, Pat Travers, Les Dudek (Steve Miller) Marc Storace (Krokus). But one of the most special projects landed me on stage playing drums with Rudy Zarzo (Ozzy, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot) and Pat Travers for a whole two hours performing an album I produced.
When it comes to servicing my clients for Pure Wave Audio, I can bring all this diverse knowledge and the scientific method approach from my E.E. degree and cut straight to the point with no bloat in the design. With that degree and being an audiophile, helps me discern what is a fad, marketing hype, or the real deal and help clients get the most out of their audio/recording goals. Not every equipment choice fits everyone or every budget, so consulting them to cover all the basis up front helps keep the whole project on target. Recently I designed a world class 8 room private recording studio in Scottsdale AZ. Everything put into it was the best of the best. We got though unscathed during the shipping shortages, but today seems to be more of a challenge. I currently have two home studio builds I am working on which should have been 3 months to build and are coming out to about a year. Not only due to equipment back orders, but also getting the contractors available to do the work. Challenging times to say the least, but the future looks bright. No matter how small or big your project is, I am here to help.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I personally am more a conversation while dining person, so going to some nice restaurants at La Encantada, or Downtown Tucson which both have a hub of nice restaurants/bars and shopping.
