We had the good fortune of connecting with Jimi Clayton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jimi, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
“One thing people outside of the Jiu-Jitsu world often misunderstand is that it’s not all about fighting or competition. Many assume it’s like a fight club — intense, aggressive, and only for people looking to dominate others. But that couldn’t be further from what we do.

At our school, the focus is on self-defense, confidence-building, and teaching students how to stay calm and in control under pressure. We’re proud to offer a structured, safe, and ego-free environment where students of all ages and backgrounds can grow at their own pace.

Our goal isn’t just to teach effective techniques — it’s to empower people. We see students come in shy or unsure of themselves and leave class standing taller, feeling stronger, and believing in their ability to handle real-life situations. That transformation is what truly defines our approach to Jiu-Jitsu.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey in Jiu-Jitsu began because I was intrigued by how effective and practical the art is. But over time, it became much more than that — a passion for helping others grow, I learned the importance of creating a positive, structured, and ego-free environment — and that’s something I carry into every class.

What drives me most is seeing our students smile and connect, from the youngest kids to our most advanced practitioners. That sense of community and personal growth is what makes Jiu-Jitsu so special.

“It hasn’t always been easy — I’ve faced my share of self-doubt and physical setbacks — but each challenge pushed me to grow, not just as a practitioner, but as a leader. What got me through was the decision to keep moving forward, even on the hard days, was the incredible support of my students, who have become like family to me. They’ve lifted me up in ways they probably don’t even realize, and their commitment reminds me every day why this work matters.

Along the way, I’ve learned that success is built on being consistent, humble, and willing to learn. Every struggle has given me the tools to lead with more purpose.

What I want the world to know is that our school isn’t just about how fast you can tap someone or how sharp your technique is. It’s about building confidence, resilience, and community. We create a space where people feel seen, supported, and empowered — both on and off the mats.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, I might be the worst tour guide — I have to admit I don’t get out as much as I should! But hopefully, they’d visit during the cooler months. I’d definitely take them outside, maybe on a hike. There are so many great spots for that around here. Afterward, we’d have to find a patio to grab some street tacos — can’t beat that combo!

In the evening, one of my favorite things to do is hit a wine bar and enjoy some live music. And of course, they’d have to visit the school and get a free introductory Jiu-Jitsu class — gotta show them what I’m all about!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
“I’d definitely like to give a shoutout to all the instructors and students at our school. They’ve created an environment that’s not only technically strong, but also incredibly supportive, respectful, and welcoming. What makes our school special is that it’s not about ego or showing off — it’s about helping each other grow, on and off the mats. Whether someone is training for self-defense, confidence, fitness, or even just mental clarity, everyone’s treated with the same care and respect. That kind of culture doesn’t happen by accident — it’s built by the people who lead and show up every day.

So I’d say the credit really goes to the community that’s been built around our school. It’s what inspired me and what keeps me passionate about Jiu-Jitsu. I’d like to give a special shoutout to Professor Chris Bailey, who I’ve learned from since the very beginning of my Jiu-Jitsu journey. He taught me not just the technical side of the art, but more importantly, the value of creating a positive, respectful environment within the school. His approach really shaped how I see Jiu-Jitsu — not as a competitive or aggressive practice, but as a way to build people up, help them feel more confident, and create a strong sense of community. That mindset stuck with me and continues to guide how I train, teach, and interact with others on and off the mats.

And of course, none of this would be possible without Grandmaster Hélio Gracie, who started this amazing art back in 1925. One of my favorite quotes from him is: ‘Jiu-Jitsu is for the protection of the individual: the older man, the weak, the child, the lady, and the young woman; anyone who doesn’t have the physical attributes to defend themselves.’ That spirit is at the core of what we do — making Jiu-Jitsu accessible, empowering, and inclusive for everyone, regardless of age, size, or background.”
