We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanne Jarman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joanne, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My floral business began when my husband and I owned and operated a wedding and reception facility in early 2000. I began offering florals as a service there and when we sold the facility, I continued to do wedding and event flowers. Owning my own business and working from home afforded me the opportunity to be with my kids most of the time and schedule work around school, activities and vacations. As our children grew, they were able to earn money working for the family business, helping in the shop, designing, and delivering flowers.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My business has evolved greatly over the years and so has my style as a florist. From my early beginnings as a wedding and event florist to my full-scale floral business today, I have grown professionally and artistically. My floral business began as an offshoot of the wedding and event facility that my husband and I owned. I am self-taught, I learned my skills from the information I gleaned online on YouTube and florist websites. Online information was not plentiful in the early 2000’s, thus I learned a lot through experimenting with mechanics and designs. As the years passed, the expectations that I had for my business changed. In the early years, it was a way for me to earn money for my family and express myself creatively, while being at home to raise my young children. As they grew, the business evolved to include them. Wedding and event work expanded to planning, designing and decorating ceremonies and receptions, complete with an expansive rental inventory that included tables, linens, arches, backdrops, as well as flowers. I’ve also added sympathy flowers and daily deliveries to my services and my children help in the shop and deliver flower orders. Each new service that I added required me to learn new skills and design techniques, and the ever-changing floral style trends challenge me to think out-of-the-box and create fresh and fun designs for my clients. As much as I love to be creative and work with beautiful flowers, what I love most about my business, is that it has allowed me to work with my children and spend more time with them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Arizona is a beautiful state, I would throw in a couple of road trips for a week-long visit! I love unique places and have an equal love for nature and fancy things! In the valley, I would have to visit the Wildlife World Zoo. It’s hands down the best zoo in the area! My favorite mall is Scottsdale Fashion Square, and it’s next to OldTown Scottsdale, a fun place to visit, you have to eat at the Sugarbowl while you’re there! Downtown Gilbert is another favorite for me, I love a night out that starts with dinner at Joe’s BBQ or Liberty Market, and a show at Hale Theatre for a show in the round, excellent entertainment! If my bestie visits in February, I’d head out to the Renaissance Festival, after an early breakfast at Joe’s Farm Grill, get Joe’s Big Breakfast! I couldn’t miss the chance to go to the Lavender Farm and mansion tour at Chateau De Vie in Chandler, it’s a gorgeous property that’s evolved over the years, my dad did a lot of the woodworking, he’s was a European master craftsman. On the way home, I would stop by Merchant Square, also in Chandler. It’s an amazing combination of antiques, gift items and delicious food at the restaurant, The American Way smokehouse. I would round out the week with a visit to Schnepf farms, hopefully during one of their festivals, I love the small town vibe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, which includes my husband and all 6 of our children! Over the last 20+ years of business, they have all played an invaluable part in making my business successful.
