We had the good fortune of connecting with John Idalis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by honesty. When people are brutally honest, it inspires me. I know that’s kinda an odd thing to be inspired by haha, but it inspires me. To not be afraid of the truth, is something I admire.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Yeah, so I’m a singer-songwriter, which I got into quite recently with my first collection of songs I released about a year ago. I’m still warming up to the idea of being a singer. I’ve been a poet for years, and I got into music recently as a route to perform my poems. I think what sets me a part with my first album and upcoming one, is my love for concept albums. I got my bachelors in theatre so I’m attracted to albums that are like stories. I’m definitely really excited for my second album. I’m not singing on this album, I’m not the main character, but rather my friend, Elizabeth St. Clair. A change in perspective. I think getting a performance degree played a huge role in where I am today. I thought the theatre program I attended was easy, maybe because I was having fun haha. I’ve learned to stop giving a *bleep*. Of course, it’s great to take inspiration from others but don’t feel the need to emulate their exact route because everyone’s journey is different. So you can’t compare yourself to others or copy others. Don’t be afraid of what others think of you- you’re on you’re own unique journey, different from everyone else’s. So don’t be afraid to do things differently from others. My story?…. is that I’m still on my journey. Figuring myself out everyday.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, if we were no longer in a pandemic and my best friend was in town, I’d take them to First Friday in Phoenix. Then Saturday, we’d go to Old Town Scottsdale and visit Pita House, my favorite spot for Middle Eastern cuisine. Sunday, Scottsdale Fashion Square. Monday, Mekong Plaza for red-bean buns and boba! Tuesday, Downtown Tempe and Lake. Wednesday, Tempe History Museum. And Thursday, ASU Art Museum.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom. I would not be where and who I am today without her. We live together and she’s the best roommate ever. She is so self-less and full of love, I admire her personality. Our apartment is super small., so she can hear what I write and gives me input. I trust her opinion on my art. So I always ask for her advice when it comes to story, character development, melody, etc. She is definitely the best momager. (Mom/manager).
