We had the good fortune of connecting with John O’Dowd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It was pretty simple, I was an independent medical sales rep and was not enjoying it nor making good money. I had taught my self to weld a few years earlier and grew up with my dad working construction so always enjoyed working with my hands. One morning I just decided that if I wasn’t going to make good money I might as well do something I enjoy doing!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My company is a custom steel fabrication shop. I am licensed with the State of Arizona in Ornamental Metals, meaning all non-structural steel. I fabricate anything from artistic pieces such as the piece above the bar at The Scott Resort in Scottsdale to patio tables to handrails to barn door hardware. What I would like to think that sets my company apart is the variety of work I do. I am always lookin for a new challenging build. As far as how we got to where I am at, just hard work and a fearlessness of taking on new and challenging jobs.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Got to say the outdoors. If its the fall/winter/spring the desert is one of the most beautiful places in the world! If it the summer then the white mountains. Arizona has such a diverse landscape and miles upon miles of outdoors to explore! Crown King is a great place to visit and on the way there you always got to stop in Cleter for a beer!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two people. My wife, Jennifer, first and foremost! She 100% supported me in this somewhat crazy idea and never wavered in my ability to make this work. Secondly my dad, he is the one that originally taught me to work with my hands.
