We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jon, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
What ever you choose to do in life is a gamble. It might cost you money, time, embarrassment. But the lesson you learn as you go through your career journey is that the money lost time lost are actual extremely important lessons. It teaches you the value of being well informed and prepared. And if you truely love what you are going after the risk is a small cost to do buisness.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create music videos for up and coming artists in the southwest region of the US. It all started with a flip camera an artist friend of mine shooting near a rail road track that was behind my house. I said lets try this camera out and shoot a music video. The video came out TERRIBLE but it was an AHA moment where i saw all my mistakes and knew that i could easily do better. I did free work for about 2 years just making alot of mistakes and trying to help some local artists get some music videos (youtube wasnt very big yet). During that learning period i made over 100 music videos. with that experience under my belt i invested in my self and bought my self a decent camera and after that i was off to the races. I was good at making alot of mistakes but learning from them. With out any formal school or training I was able to position my self as one of the best music video directors in the southwest.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would go tubing in the salt river. then downtown for some tacos. then end the evening with a cruise on sunday at south phoenix listening to oldies in an old school.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out the Arizona hiphop community. Nothing would be possible with out them. through out my career i have been supported by the community and it has helped me grow and develop.
