We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Geib and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jon, how does your business help the community?
Everyone wants to be able to at some point retire and enjoy their remaining years ideally traveling, relaxing, or spending time with family without worry about money. I help people reach those goals and live the life they have always dreamed of. Investing is hard and time consuming. Most people don’t have the extra time needed to focus on learning how to invest properly nor do they want to spend their free time they could have with friends and family learning it. Why would they, they work hard all day for years to move up in their carrier, start a family and then enjoy the free time they have. My company helps them focus on what’s important to them right now and ensures they don’t have to worry about the stress of retiring.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a RIA “registered investment advisory” firm I work as a fiduciary for my clients. This is very different than as a broker at other firms. As a fiduciary I must and do put my clients best interest before my own. The investment world has lots of hidden fees and commissions that in many cases are not good for the client and are meant to help the banks and brokerages make money. A brokerage makes decisions based on what is called suitability for their clients. Suitability just means its suitable for the client not necessarily good for the client just suitable. This leads many brokers and brokerages to sell product’s or investments that generate large commissions and fees from the client. As a fiduciary I have to see the big picture and ensure I make decisions that make the most sense for the client.
I have been able to grow my business over the years by focusing on doing the right thing all the time for my clients. I get almost all of my clients by referrals and you only get referrals by keeping your clients happy. Giving a personal referral is hard to do sometimes because now your name and reputation are on the line with your referral if things don’t go well. By ensuring I am looking out for my clients best interests and not just selling them some product my clients feel more at ease referring their friends over for help.
One of the biggest things I have learned over the years as a business owner is you are always on the clock. My clients can call anytime of day or night if they have questions. My job is to help them enjoy their free time and focus on everything other than their retirement planning and progress. Most of the time that means when they do have questions those questions are not necessarily during the normal nine to five. I encourage them to call me when ever they like and when it is convenient for them. If that means the middle of the night or weekend so be it. If they cant sleep at night or are worried about their portfolio or money then I am not doing my job well enough.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have three favorite restaurants in the Phoenix area depending on what type of food I am craving at the moment. The first two are a little on the more expensive side but absolutely worth it. Buck & Rider has the freshest oysters in the valley hands down as well as some amazing steaks. Next would be Bourbon and Bones in the east valley. Their service and presentation is top notch not to mention they have a bourbon list with over 600 options. Last would be a small local sushi restaurant called Mido Sushi. It is a small family owned business that goes way above and beyond. Their food is fresh with large servings and you have the small family atmosphere and feel inside. As for places to go and see, Phoenix has so much to offer. In the spring we have some huge events like the PGA’s Phoenix Open, Barrett Jackson Car Auction, Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships and many other events. We have six months of amazing weather which should be spent outside as much as possible. We have so many golf courses and hiking trails it would take months to do all of them. We also have a few large lakes for boating and water activities in the summer as well as salt river tubing. When its 110 degrees outside hanging out in the water is always a good time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had way to many people help me along the way to name them all. With that said I would have to say the biggest single supporter of me has been my wife. We meet a couple years after I got out of the military and was going back to college to finish my degree. She has helped support my ideas and decisions both when I worked in corporate America and when I decided to take the leap and start my own business. Starting a business is hard and it takes time to build it. My wife supported me through the growing pains and each decision I made as it grew.
