We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Kaine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always experienced life through a creative lens and felt the need to allow that to become my reality. I like working hard, I like working with my hands, and I like to allow life to change me and be fluid, but I don’t like doing work that doesn’t fulfill me spiritually, emotionally and mentally. Having the opportunity to create something from the heart and share it with the world is a gift that I have to be grateful for every day, and I feel like I can only do that by working to make it possible. We live in a culture of outcomes and bottom lines, so doing something I love to do to make my living is an every day choice in the material sense, but if I lived in a world where the business side didn’t exist, I’d probably be doing the same thing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My approach to music is pretty ethereal. I like to think I’m just one of many vessels for the universe to express itself. I’ve written songs that seemed to have no relevance to my present life and then, years later, it’s exactly what I need to hear. I find myself connecting with this emotional being inside that I have a personal relationship with and we express it together. That part is freeing. It allows me to make any kind of music I want while still being who I am. My struggles with mental health, trauma and grief forced me to reevaluate my messages. With EMDR therapy, the love of my people, animals and plants and the thousands of people who came before me, I was able to find meaning and purpose in my creativity. I just want people to know it’s all love, that where they are is where I’m at and that’s alright.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would probably have to say I’d take them to my favorite nature spots in the Hudson Valley, show them some of the spots that I have in my mind as the comfort zones and just sit for a while, taking in the energy. I’d definitely be taking them out for some good food and tequila but I’d probably do most of the cooking. I think there’s something spiritual in feeding someone that is more than just physical nutrition. Definitely would take them to the hometown, Peekskill, New York, show them the original ‘Yellow Brick Road’.

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
Since I was a kid I have had this reoccurring dream that Stevie Wonder and I are sitting in my elementary school cafeteria eating lunch. His music and aura inspire me every day and having that inner vision makes it more vivid. I grew up the youngest of 4 boys in a very musical family and every member of it very talented and extremely humble. I wouldn’t be who and were I am if not for them. My partner, Marisa inspires me to take care of myself and to believe in myself. My late friends Travis and Jeffrey both taught me how to love from the heart, even if grief. Khalil Gibran’s book “The Profit” and Lao-Tzu’s Tao Te Ching remind me to stay curious and fluid. My friend MC Humble, one of the best freestyle rappers and farmers that I know keeps me grounded and connected,
