We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started The Food of Joy in late 2015, I was constantly asked as a busy vegetarian model what & where I would eat. People never seemed to believe that the food I would eat looked or even tasted good, so I figured maybe they should see what it truly looks like when I eat a vegan or vegetarian meal.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Such great questions, I believe my authenticity and honesty is what makes my page special. I took a break from social media for awhile and I’m glad I did that because sometime life happens and taking time to address the real world is important. I’m starting over and because I’m going at my pace and not someone else’s it is easy, challenges arise but when you remember its you vs. you adjusting can be easy. I want people to know you can be transparent & successful and to always stay in gratitude.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are a few places I love and will tell people about are as follows and my go to item.
Early Bird Vegan – The Dr. J (with Avocado)
Desert Island Eatery – Chickpea Nachos & Ginger Beer
Ingos Arcadia – Paris Texas Burger (veggie patty & no bacon)
The Collins – Artichoke Appetizer
And for a more memorable and interactive weekend I’d hit Sugar Jam in Scottsdale for brunch, Chic Chef in Tempe for a drink and Lush Lounge to support all local black & women owned businesses!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people along my journey that deserve their flowers, I especially would like to give thanks to my team. Every time I prepare to do a YouTube my concept/idea probably sounds like “Courage the Cowardly Dog” to them. Thankfully the video director I work with knows what I’m saying and knows what looks good and does the editing (because that is not my skill set), my makeup artist ALWAYS slays my face and my nail artist ensures my nails look pristine! There are other influencers and entrepreneurs who have given me little tidbits of information along the way and that is truly appreciated.
