We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Schweiss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In the back of my head, I had always thought about starting my own creative business but I was too afraid to leave my comfort zone and assurance of a safe job, so I went the more standard route of getting a 9-5 job after college. But over a few years, the idea of starting my own business was still stirring in my spirit until I had a threshold where I knew that the longer I waited, the more regret I would have to live with. I knew I needed to be true to myself and to what I was being called. So I took the leap admittedly before I was really ready to be a full time photographer, but now I feel so much more aligned and confident knowing that I’m building my dream life and won’t have any regrets!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a photographer specializing in travel, elopements, and brands. I believe that every person, every couple, every brand has a story and I love to tell a story through my photos. I think the most important part of this work is making people feel seen and I feel so honored to have the opportunity to do that through my photography. It has not been easy by any means; I’m completely self-taught and pursuing photography as a business meant leaving the safety of a stable job and income. As cliché as it is, every day truly is a rollercoaster. What keeps me motivated is the knowing that I am meant to be exactly where I am, and the possibility that I could inspire even one person to pursue a big and free life through following their creative dreams.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh boy a WEEK LONG?! I would start out with a full day of West LA activities: coffee at Little Lunch followed by a long walk on the Venice Beach boardwalk and up to the Santa Monica Pier. Lunch at Great White, walk around the Venice Canals, and then drive up the PCH to Malibu for sunset.

The rest of the week would essentially be a tour of the best beaches and coffee shops in the Orange County/West LA area! Lots of thrifting, brunches, sunset beach picnics with snacks from Trader Joe’s. I just started learning how to surf, too, so I’d love to get out on the water with you! A full on stereotypical LA experience but that’s pretty much my life here and I want my friends to experience it with me!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am a part of a community called Pursuing Purpose (@pursuingpurpose.life) that has become family to me and have been unbelievably supportive in this journey!

My parents, siblings, and friends have been so supportive and encouraging, and my accountability group keeps me on track and motivated! And, of course, my INCREDIBLE clients. I have so many people to thank, wow.
