We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Dennis Fox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
From a young age I knew that whatever I did for work, I would have to do something that was a positive contribution. Something to support health and healing to individuals and the natural environment we live in.

At the age of 15 I “discovered” herbalism and from then on I knew that was it. I realized at a young age that the more we take care of our bodies, minds and souls, with a healthy and natural lifestyle, everyone benefits not only the individual but the natural environment as well.

Eventually, I made this passion for natural living into a decades long career including launching my own consultancy company Natural Community Review, LLC and developing the Canna Joint Relief family of products.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I had already been making Canna Joint Relief for many years before I brought it to market. I was simply giving it away to friends, family and community members. During the holidays I would put a label and bow on it as a gift.

During this year’s long process I was able to refine the formulation and proprietary Extended Extraction process.

I decided to officially launch the product in 2013 and now it’s in hundreds of retail stores nationwide including Sprouts Farmers Markets.

It has not been easy. Hardly! Jumping into a product category (CBD) before all the laws have been ironed out has been a wild ride for sure. I have experienced all sorts of challenges from different label requirements for different states, various counties suddenly making CBD sales unlawful, then changing their minds again and calling us all back, retail stores bringing in CBD products then deciding not to carry CBD at all. Plus credit card processing companies, website hosts, banks and more not wanting to work with CBD companies for many years. Thankfully this is slowly changing.

How have I overcome the challenges? One challenge at a time. For each challenge that arises there is a solution for overcoming it. Constantly having an emotional reaction to every challenge is exhausting! Instead, I prefer to take a more practical approach and take steps that will resolve the issue, one step at a time.

Running a small business can be overwhelming so self-care is critical if I want, not only my business to succeed, but for my own well-being and sanity. Exercise, proper nutrition, nourishing sleep…these are all part of my arsenal for supporting health in my business and also my own personal health.

I have spent decades refining my skills as an herbal practitioner. The Canna Joint Relief products I offer have a finesse that comes from decades of dedication. You can’t learn this overnight. I use particular extraction methods, called Extended Extraction, and ingredients in very specific ratios that no one else can copy. Plus, I use organic ingredients and whole plant material. This combination has produced Canna Joint Relief, one of the best selling CBD topicals in the retail stores.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Arizona so much! It really is such a diverse state from the mountains, the desserts, the cities and so much more. Of course the natural wonders of the Grand Canyon and Sedona are awe inspiring. One of my favorite places to visit in Arizona is Tucson! I just love that, even though it really is a large city, it still has a small town feeling. I particularly love the diversity of cultures, history and artists community.

And naturally, when I visit Arizona I love to visit as many Sprouts Farmers Markets, and meet as many staff members, as possible! Plus when I’m traveling around the state I can pick up all the healthy food and drink options I need to stay healthy on the road.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my sister Laura Lyn Dennis Jessup. Being my older sister I always looked up to her and wanted to be like her so when she got a job at a health food store in Los Angeles, I was about 12-13 years old at the time, naturally, I too had to get a job at a health food store when I came of age.

She helped catapult my passion for natural living.
