We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalvin Peary and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalvin, how do you think about risk?
When I started Peary Entertainment Group, it was all risk. I had no money. I’d max out my credit cards and use the money to book a show. If it went well, I’d pay the cards down. If not, I’d work odd-jobs to make money and pay down the balance until it was low enough for me to pull more cash out and do another show. I sort of figured I didn’t have much to lose & starting over wouldn’t really mean much. While no one wants to be totally broke, I figured I’d rather go broke in my teens and twenties as opposed to avoiding risk and not tasting early success. It might sound crazy but I almost needed to take the risk to give me confidence. Failing sucked but I think I it also gave me a callous attitude about losing. It wasn’t scary anymore.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My story is one of a relentless kid who just wouldn’t take no for an answer. I’d say what sets me apart from others is my attitude. I don’t believe I’ve ever accepted “no” as a legitimate answer. I’ve always said “if you can’t tell me yes, you can’t tell me no”. I don’t listen to “no”. Most people under promise and over deliver. I over sell and over deliver – no promises. I’m not selling myself short so I can’t look good. I sell myself high and it puts pressure on me to perform better. I work better under pressure.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Scottsdale. I’d probably take them to a nice restaurant in Scottsdale & disappear to a nice resort for the day. Somewhere quiet and relaxing. Out of the sun, of course.
