We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kara , what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As I was growing up and caring for animals, It seemed only natural to start my own business TLC House & Pet Sitting caring for pets is always my passion. Ever since I can remember, I was always helping my mom with all of our pets and as I was growing up. We had a cat, Gerbils, white mice, fish and horses. I loved them all. While living at home, I showed our dogs for AKC Obedience training and certification. In addition, I helped my mom at her boarding facility with all the facets of her business. Then, when I went to college, I would pet sit friends’ pets when they needed to travel or go home. I pet sat cats, dogs, Pirana and a Boa constrictor snake. So you can say, it was just a natural part of my life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have so many people to thank for their support and help over the years. First, let me say that if it was not for my dedicated and professional pet sitters who withstand a rigorous professional vetting process to qualify as a professional sitter, the business would not be the same. I have a set of professional staff that really cares for animals large or small. Probably the greatest influences I have had, has been the influence of my family, my husband, and friends who have offered their unconditional support structure in helping me design and uphold the professional ethics standards I have come to rely on in my business. I want to thank my mentors for helping me develop and grow in an ever-changing market and Lastly, I want to thank the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters Association (N.A.P.P.S.A) where I held a board position and Arizona Professional Pet Sitters Association professional organization (A.P.P.S). Thanks to all the professionals I worked with, I was voted to be the president of A.P.P.SA. I have so many people to thank for their support and help over the years. I am most proud of our sitters when clients talk about how happy they are with their service and performance. Each one of our clients become a part of the TLC family and we care for their pets as if they were our own. We send daily notes and pictures to the clients each visit. They can get their notes even if they are out of the country. I am where I am today due to hard work, flexibility, and a lot of learning about how to service clients’ needs with technology. My team especially worked hard to provide services in a way that gave the utmost help to the care of the client’s pets and we wanted to make sure that when clients were away from home, that they felt safe, secure, and not worried about the pet and house care. We wanted to give others peace of mind. No new and continuing adventure is ever as challenging as when you are trying to grow and we have grown a lot over the years. I have learned lots of lessons along the way. I have learned how to manage my time and money better. I have learned to be patient and more understanding. I think you learn and grow as an individual as you get older. You learn from your mistakes and move on. Our brand was created to represent the type of love and care for people and animals we wanted to offer. We hoped that daring to dream in life meant that while on vacation or trips associated with personal and professional life, that our clients would be able to incorporate our services to help them follow their dreams without worry for their fur babies. At TLC house and pet sitting, we value what our pets add to our lives and we stand to inspire our clients to create the life they envision for themselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow, there are so many things to do here in the city and outside. I don’t think you can do it all in one week. I would take them to all the lakes in town, but my favorite is Canyon lake. If you ever have a chance, rent a boat or take your own for a wonderful peaceful day on the lake. I think it is so beautiful and peaceful. There are so many hiking trails or off-road trails to go horseback riding or quad riding in the desert on approved trails. Plus there are also many beautiful golf courses. When we have family and friends visiting,we take them to our favorite restaurants in Chandler. We don’t eat out much as we cook at home most of the time. We find the richness of home life with a family to be rewarding.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
