We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Cummings and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
What a journey this has been! Since I started my first agency in 2011 until now, I’ve completely transformed my ‘work life balance’ – and really, how I define ‘work life balance’ to begin with. I’ve always valued having a rich, fulfilling life outside of work – but was certainly what one may consider a ‘workaholic’ for the first four years as an agency owner. Once I started Radiant Marketing agency in 2015, I began to reevaluate my priorities and how I could accomplish my professional & agency goals – without sacrificing my happiness and life. It took my nearly four years to figure it out, but in 2019 I really was able to make some big shifts in my business that allowed me to reallocate resources and redefine our mission as an agency. As a result, I refocused my time and energy in the business so that I could reduce the hours I spent working (which was key considering I now have a toddler running around too!), increase the profitability of my agency, and elevate the satisfaction and joy I get from my work.

What should our readers know about your business?
There are so many digital marketing agencies out there. In addition to our focus in the health & wellness space we feel our combined creative and analytical approach really sets us apart. We don’t shy away from the numbers, we want to make sure our campaigns are driving real results for our clients. We also pride ourselves on our concierge approach – we intentionally onboard only a few new clients each year to ensure we’re providing the best customer service and dedicated attention our clients deserve. We’re also proud to align with brands making a real difference in the world, empowering us to put our skills and experience to work to help create a better future for individuals! I started my first agency in 2011 with a business partner and realized (through numerous mistakes) that the most important thing you can do for your business and team is pay attention to your financials and ensure that, above all else, what you’re doing is profitable. Profitability is key to expanding your services, serving your clients and employing the best team possible!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of the main things I love about Arizona is there is such a wide array of things to do and places to see – for all personality types. We tend to be more adventurous outdoorsy people, so I would most likely recommend a hike (San Tan Mountains for an easier, more remote hike or Camelback for something challenging with rewarding views). I would recommend hopping from the city to the suburbs – starting with a relaxing brunch amongst the olive trees at Queen Creek Olive Mill to an evening enjoying a comedy show, concert or baseball game in Phoenix. And Scottsdale never disappoints with their wide selection of delicious restaurants and bars!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m a strong believer that few successful individuals get to where they are without a strong, supportive and honest network of friends, family and mentors. I am happy to say that I’ve built an incredible network of supporters who have helped keep me grounded, humble and focused on what’s most important in life including my friends and fellow entrepreneurs: Travis Cummings (my hubby), Amanda Long, Carla Reeves and my incredible Radiant team!
