We had the good fortune of connecting with Karie Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
It’s hard to say one thing, but I’d have to say my heart. I have always, always loved baking and when I was able to have my own bakery it was like pouring my heart out. It had been years and years of thoughts and ideas brought to life, so in a way it made for some easy decision-making as far as the name of the bakery, the color for branding and the style for marketing. Butter Bakery is very much “me”. I use real ingredients in my baked goods, real butter, homemade vanilla, all the good stuff. When I was working with Keola Creative to design my logo, I wanted the rustic, simple style, and he encompassed it completely. I love it, the color and everything. Every time I look at it, it makes me smile. As a young adult, I always struggled with what I wanted to do with my life, but some life experiences brought me to the place to take the leap and when I am baking, I feel peaceful and productive. I put a lot of my heart into what I bake because I want people to have good memories from the moments when they are enjoying their sweet treats and who they share them with. I’ve felt that baking was nurtured in me by my family – my mom, my aunt, and my grandpa in particular – and I want my baked goods and their packaging to reflect that “baked from scratch” feeling.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At Butter Bakery we provide baked from scratch treats for your next gathering, get-together, or as a gift! We offer cookies, brownies, bars, cupcakes, cake pops, mini cakes, and other creative goodies. We use quality ingredients to make the very tastiest of baked goods. We enjoy putting together dessert boxes, dessert boards and dessert platters for events or gifts as that showcases a variety of our goodies. We have been in business for almost 3 years and have earned a lot of business by word of mouth, which has been wonderful and we so appreciate it! Social media has been a great marketing tool for Butter Bakery, as well. We do not have a retail location and run the bakery out of our home, so that has been a blessing and a challenge. It definitely helps to keep the overhead costs low, but it also keeps our name out of the forefront as well, which can work against us as people like to visit a bakery location. We also don’t keep stock on hand and need a day or two notice to have fresh baked goods for orders and that doesn’t always work for customers, understandably. The biggest lesson I learned was having a friend to help. When Veronica joined me a year and a half into it, by baking all the cakes, cake pops, and cupcakes, she brought her artistic abilities, ideas, and fun and I have no regrets about that decision! We’d like the world to know that Butter Bakery offers baked goods that not only look good but taste good, just like grandma used to make!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If they are new to the desert, then definitely the Desert Botanical Gardens – especially while the luminarias are lit up at night. During Summer, hanging out at Marriot Desert Ridge with the pools would be fun. Eating would be only at locally-owned (non-chain!) restaurants like PoPo’s Mexican Food, or the Original Garcia’s. The Farm at South Mountain is beautiful – any of the restaurants and/or just hanging out in the grassy areas, walking around the farmer’s market or stores is so nice. Hiking up South Mountain is a treat and looking out over the Valley. Westgate is nice to walk around or Tempe Town Lake. Shopping at or around Chandler Mall is nice. Changing Hands is fun to walk around, shop and have a coffee/drink at the downtown location. Any of the local breweries are great to eat at, especially in Uptown area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Shoutout goes to my husband, Brian. He is unconditionally honest with me as a taste-tester and also my biggest advocate. Sometimes he can forget that I am a female with feelings and doesn’t temper his comments with niceties but I always appreciate that I know where he stands on my sweets. And even when I ignore his feedback, he still supports my decisions because not everybody has the same tastes. I’ve also converted him to a lemon bar lover with my lemon bars! He has supported me from the start and besides being willing to taste-test, he is also willing to wash dishes, stir caramel, talk numbers, go over ideas, listen to me think out loud and just be there. He’s a pretty good guy!
