We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Wear and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Sweet Cravings first started in my kitchen. I quickly realized I had outgrown my small space at home and would need to expand in the future. I had the opportunity to showcase some of my treats at a local boutique and took that opportunity as a challenge for myself and see if it was something I could make work in the long run. Within a week I came to the realization that my small home business was definitely worth expanding and quickly jumped on the opportunity of leasing a suite and thus the grand opening of Sweet Cravings as an official storefront! Throughout this journey I have grown not only as a business but there has been personal growth as well.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up one of my favorite memories was baking desserts at home with my mom and my grandma, and if we didn’t have homemade treats we would go to the local “Panaderia”. This is something that we hope to bring to our community, a place where they can pick up delicious baked goods and simultaneously create lasting memories. All of our treats are homemade and some are recipes passed down from generations, we feel like this sets us apart from the big grocery chain bakeries. Because let’s face it, is there anything more nostalgic than the smell of your grandmother’s kitchen? Getting to this point has not been a cake walk (pun intended), but it has definitely been worth every challenge we have overcome.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have lived in Arizona since I was 4 years old, and when people hear “Arizona” they instantly think “Desert”, and although yes, it is very hot and dry we also have some amazing places that are worth visiting. Some of my favorite places to visit are the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and the lakes. Depending on which city you are in I always suggest asking the locals what their favorite place to eat/drink or hang out is. I always find the small businesses to be the most intriguing and they have so much personality. Growing up in Mesa our favorite place to go to was Helados Zacatecas, a family owned and operated ice cream shop, and now as an adult that is one of our favorite places to go as a family!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The success of Sweet Cravings would not have been possible without the support of my family, friends and community. No matter how small they may feel their efforts are, they have been a huge contribution to Sweet Cravings success. From my husband making last minute runs to the grocery store, the kids praise and compliments on all my creations, my mom & pops and brother joining me when I decided to open up an actual shop and of course all of our AMAZING customers! I am grateful for everyone that has been a part of our journey thus far. We have attained several awards in our 1 year as an official bakery; Best of Pinal 2021 (Dessert), Creme De La Copa (Best Business) Creme De La Copa (Best Dessert), Creme De La Copa (Best Customer Service), all these awards are thanks to all the wonderful customers that nominated us and continue to grace us with their patronage and trust us with all of their special celebrations.
