We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Loetterle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a child, I was captivated by movies, art, and stories, and I always dreamed of creating my own version of that magic. I yearned for something beyond the typical 9 to 5 job. When I decided to pursue my artistic journey professionally, my main goal was to have the freedom and flexibility to express myself through my work. Art is not just a hobby for me, it’s my ultimate passion. I consciously choose to infuse my passion with everything I do because I believe in bringing magic to people’s lives and making a positive impact, no matter how small it may seem.

I strongly believe that art should be accessible to everyone, radiating its beauty and touching as many hearts as possible. Even if someone doesn’t end up purchasing anything, the fact that my art can bring a smile to their face or brighten their day fills me with immense fulfillment. For me, being an artist means spreading magic, happiness, and positivity through my work.

Believe it or not, my journey began with a simple pinky promise. It all started at this amazing art market that my husband and I frequently attend. On that remarkable day, we made a special promise that, by the following year, I would have my very own art business and be selling my creations at that very market.

Now, after almost two years have passed, I not only achieved my dream of showcasing my art at that incredible market, but I also had the privilege of exhibiting my work at various other markets across the state. And let’s not forget about the fantastic comic conventions I’ve attended! It has been an extraordinary journey so far.

So, here’s to pinky promises, embracing our passions, and bringing some magic into the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the key to the success of my art is that I make what truly excites me. It is not only about following my passion, but also bringing it along with me. This allows me to create work that that speaks to my authentic self. It’s like a little piece of my soul being poured onto the canvas or whichever medium I choose to work with. I genuinely believe that people can sense this authenticity in an artist and their creations.

Through my art, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and connecting with so many fantastic individuals. They’ve shared their beautiful stories, made me laugh, and even become dear friends. I honestly cannot express enough gratitude for the wonderful people I’ve been fortunate enough to encounter on this artistic journey.

The journey of developing my own style of work has been an incredible blend of my many interests and the inspiring influence of other talented artists. I still have so much room to grow, but I can honestly say that I’m thoroughly enjoying every step of the way. It hasn’t always been an easy road to get where I am today. Life’s challenges, mental well-being, and various other factors greatly impacted my ability to draw for a long time. However, I eventually found my way back to it. Art has become my solid way of expressing myself, but it took me a while to truly understand that. Above all, the most important lesson I’ve learned throughout my artistic journey is to always be kind to myself, no matter what.

Nowadays, I like to think that my art celebrates the magical world of whimsy and fantasy. Growing up, I was captivated by the enchantment of Disney, Ghibli, and the countless fantasy books that portrayed captivating realms. These experiences have had a lasting impact on my artistic expression. I am so glad that I can share them with the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Arizona is such an amazing place with countless unique little spots to explore! One of my favorite places to hang out is Brick Road Coffee, a super fun coffee shop where you can chill and enjoy some delicious drinks and treats. Right next door is Jerry’s Artarama, a cool art store filled with endless art supplies. And who can resist a visit to Bookman’s or Changing Hands? I mean, you can never have too many books, right? With newly acquired art supplies, head over to the beautiful botanical gardens and immerse yourself in the stunning flora. Just imagine the amazing sketches and drawings one could create there! And when the weather is perfect, go on some thrilling adventures on the many mountains and trails that Arizona has to offer.
Now, let’s talk about food because, oh my goodness, there is such a wide variety of delicious options here! If you have any food allergies, don’t worry, check out Intentional Foods, a fantastic spot that caters specifically to those with dietary restrictions. And of course, don’t forget about Hachi Ramen and Cornish Pasty Co.! These places serve up some seriously scrumptious eats.
But you know what truly sets Arizona apart? The people. I’ve found that everyone here is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The sense of community and love is simply incredible. That’s what makes this place so special to me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to take a moment to give a massive shoutout to my absolutely amazing husband, Josh! He has been my rock, always showing me endless love, patience, support, and encouragement. Without him, I couldn’t have built my business and pursued my dreams. I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am for his unwavering belief in me.

And speaking of incredible support systems, I cannot forget to mention my wonderful sister and mother. You two have been my pillars, constantly showering me with love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for always being there for me!

I also want to give a special shoutout to all of my incredibly awesome friends who have been a part of my journey. You guys are seriously incredible and magical! Your constructive criticism, support, and all the laughs we’ve shared together have truly made a difference in my artistic growth. I am beyond fortunate to have each and every one of you in my life.
