We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathleen Silvani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathleen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

The creative spark has always been a part of my life. Over the years, I searched for ways to channel the artist in myself and find a viable solution to build a business. In the past, I have had some success in partnering with stores featuring handmade art. However, I was attracted to E-Commerce,  the ability to create and sell without the added costs involved in brick and mortar shops. Various online platforms were available and I chose to build a small business online.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I make small batch gemstone jewelry. Everything is designed and handmade by myself. I typically use sterling silver and 14K gold fill. I make an effort to source gemstones ethically and use recycled metal when I can. Much of the work is inspired by past and current travel. The wanderlust is strong! Souvenirs from travel would always be some street art or a piece of local jewelry. Over the years the jewelry I have created has evolved. The goal has always been make pieces that can be given and worn for many years to come.

The Fleur Noir Studio name is built on a girls trip to New Orleans eleven years ago and a sterling silver “fleur de lis” ring. I bought it a market in the French Quarter. I wear the ring daily and it is a powerful reminder of a great bond of friendship and so many and crazy wonderful memories. The great thing about jewelry is it can carry so much meaning and memory. When you wear it, the memory continues to thrive.

Building the brand has not been easy. It is far easier to create than to market the business. Jewelry is a very competitive market. What I have learned, is not to compare your journey with others. And I have had success in growth in the last year. I hope to continue to keep that momentum going.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Great places to visit are the Downtown Scottsdale, Carefree, the Desert Botanical Gardens, Musical Instrument Museum, Phoenix Art Museum and Taliesin. Great hiking spot are right in the valley – McDowell Mountains, Camelback Mountain, and South Mountain. Drive to the Superstition Mountains, see the Goldfield Ghost Town, Tortilla Flats, and stop by Queen Creek Olive Mill on the way back home. Go to the local Festivals and Marketplaces. Have a cocktail or afternoon tea at the Phoenician Resort. Eat at Orange Grab some of the best chicken and fries from the Chicken Coop Food Truck or perhaps whip up a mean Thai Curry at my home. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My husband David supported all of my efforts to build my small business. He would go to the gem shows with me and be there to assist in the handmade markets. It would be his day off and he would be setting up a tent or hauling tables.

In addition, both long time friends: photographer, Laura McCumber and abstract artist Lara Klinger for being such trendsetters. They both really understand the passion of putting the work out there.
