We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy Huerta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was in my first year of college and hated it… the thought of spending so much money on tuition for a future job I would most likely hate. I just had three goals for my career: I wanted to make others feel good, I was able to support myself financially and I didn’t want to loathe going to work. It has taken me about 7 years in the lash industry and lots of bumps in the road to finally enjoy my career path. I was tired of working for other people dreams and wanted to create my own.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a small business owner is never easy but I wanted to make sure that I was ethical with everything I did. When you come to get a service done by me I want to make sure that you know you will be leaving feel confident and pampered. I worked and managed other salons that it was quantity over quality and it left me feeling guilty at the end of the workday. When I started to work for myself I wanted to make sure I was up-to-date on techniques and trainings, had quality products and making sure my guests are happy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a difficult question honestly because I’m such a introvert and homebody. I love going to small and local breakfast places. My two current of obsessions are Old Time Kafé and Buendia Breakfast & Lunch Cafe. I also love going to sports events like to watch the Arizona Cardinals or the Dodgers if they are in town. Now that I am a mom, you can definitely find me at our local zoo almost every weekend and children’s museum.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Michael, is definitely my biggest supporter. He is the reason why I decided to go to beauty school in the first place. He was there when I toured schools to every move to a different salon throughout the years. He has been there for every emotional roller coaster every small business has. Secondly, my parents. They are both extremely, hard working immigrants that wanted their daughters to be happy. My parents never once doubted my goals and I hope to one day repay them for their sacrifices.
