We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Trout and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks are a huge part about starting your own business. I was only 19 years old when I took a leap of faith and decided to go out of the norm and started my own photography business. I was scared that what I was doing would never be good enough compared to others in the same business field as I. Throughout my college career I have continued to make running my business a priority alongside graduating college. I have been able to balance work, school, and social life for the past four years and it has been worth every second. This May, I just graduated from college and I am taking the risk of doing my photography full time. I believe that you have to take big risks to get what you want in life. Doing photography full time and being able to support myself is an amazing surreal feeling. I am so blessed to be able to do what I love everyday and have the support of my friends, family, and clients.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
A little bit about me and my business. I am a traveling photographer. I mainly do senior portraits on a day-to-day basis. I would say that something that sets me apart from others is that I like to make my senior sessions an experience. From the start to the finish my main goal is to have an absolute understanding on what is expected. I want them to be creative with their pictures. Through my lens, it is my goal to capture their ‘story’ and personality.

Something that I am most proud of is that I am able to make each and everyone of my clients feel comfortable and that they are able to be themselves during their session.

Starting your own business no matter what it is, isn’t easy. I started my business knowing absolutely nothing. Since then, I have invested in myself and my business to get me to the next level. The challenges that you face while owning your own business are never ending, but you must take them one step at a time. Along the way I have learned to be patient with myself, invest in your business, and to give yourself a day off!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting I would take them to Papago park to watch the planes fly over the beautiful sunset while sitting on a mountain. There is no better view!

I would take them to the Montauk, Diego Pops, and AZ 88.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would give a shoutout to my clients. They are truly the best. Each day I get to work with the most amazing people who inspire me to be better for them!
