We had the good fortune of connecting with Kawika Miles Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kawika, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
My family has a motto that I feel encompasses the habits and values that have helped me succeed: Grit, Honor, Gratitude.
Grit to push through the days that nobody likes, having the discipline to do what needs to be done, no matter how much you don’t feel like doing it.
Honor and having it in all my dealings with myself and everyone I interact with.
Gratitude for all things both great and small. I strongly believe that everything in my life has purpose and meaning, and it is up to me to utilize it to my advantage. God has so much to give and if I can’t be grateful for the little things, what kind of steward I am over His kingdom?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always enjoyed writing and creating worlds from my imagination. Living in the United States, I’ve come to love the freedom of speech and expression as a blessing that not everyone has access to in the world that we live in. Writing has never been easy. I struggled for a long time with spelling and being able to articulate my thoughts, but writing is something I’ve always enjoyed putting effort into perfecting. It is a way of thinking that is not appreciated anymore, especially with the advancements of AI that is writing papers, dissertations, and stories for everyone too lazy to put in the effort to think for themselves. In the time I’ve spent writing and creating worlds on paper, I’ve come to appreciate my Father in Heaven in the crafting of the world we all live in, and if I was just wanting to put out as much content as I possibly can, I never would have grown for the appreciation of creation.
If there is one thing that I’d want the world to know about my story is that don’t take for granted the amazing miracles that are at our fingertips. From writing an article that can be seen within seconds on the other side of the world to sitting in a chair while flying through the sky, the miracles around us are sometimes wasted on an ungrateful generation, and I fear that we fall into that trap all too often.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a simple guy, making food and the outdoors a basic staple in my life. One of my favorite places to eat every time I come back is Eggstasy. Breakfast foods are my absolute favorite and bring out my inner fat boy (and fun fact, I used to be really overweight). So, from Eggstasy to Regio’s Mexican Food to a good ol’ Champion at the Welcome Diner.
That being said, I do like a good American time as well, so, getting some range time at Shooter’s World is an absolute must as well!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my family. From my ancestors before that laid the foundation of my heritage, my parents, wife and child who support me along the way, and to the family yet to be that drives me to create a lasting legacy for them.
