We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaitlyn Maree and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaitlyn, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
During a worldwide pandemic, the online clothing business boomed. Many different artists, from all walks of life, had time during lockdown to create even more art, many of which started selling their art, whether it be prints or cosplays, or clothing. With alternative type clothing brands like mine, the internet saw more brands forming. There is a lot of competition when it comes to any sort of t-shirt or design business, but what keeps people going is knowing that they’ve created a community of people that are die hard fans of your brand. You will constantly see more successful clothing brands and artists and that will make you want to turn tail and run. On the days that you feel like your art will never be good enough under a certain category, you have to keep your thoughts focused on the people that buy your art and your clothes and how your brand is important to them. You know that you should keep going when you realize that all of your work continues to pay off. You know to keep going when you look back when you first started and compare it to where you are now. Even though you are still incredibly tiny business, you’ve created that following and that community from nothing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been creative since I was younger. I started doing very small tattoo designs when I was a teenager and, of course, got to the point where I felt like my art was not good enough for the world to see. It wasn’t until my twenties when I started painting, which brought me to try my hand at graphic design. From the moment I started doing graphic design, I fell in love. I was given an iPad for my birthday this past year and was able to take my designs to an entirely different level. I take on commissions for streamers, as well as doing commissions for other people’s clothing brands, as well as my own. I’m incredibly proud of the fact that I have been able to push myself and produce all different types of artwork. There are some types of art that I simply cannot do, and I realized that it’s okay. For an artist, it is okay to branch out of your comfort zone, as well as staying inside of your comfort zone. And if you feel like you cannot get an art style down, practice really does make perfect.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like this question because my best friend is from an entirely different state. I’ve already mapped out the places that I would take her. Within the city, there is a small speakeasy in downtown Gilbert that I adore. It’s called The White Rabbit and the entire atmosphere is stunning. You can only get the password if you sign up for emails, and the password changes every month. But the food is great and the drinks are magnificent. For places that are outside of the city, I would take someone on a 3-hour drive up to Pinetop, Arizona. That’s where my family lives. There’s something about being in the woods for a weekend that refreshes you.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I started this business as a co-owner with one of my closest friends. As he became busy with other things, I took on black serpent clothing on my own. From there, I developed a following of people who are all like-minded, and those people became friends. The only recognition goes towards the people that have supported my small business and continue to interact with social media posts and buy new designs that come out.
