We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Zilla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kay, how do you think about risk?
I think taking risks is a necessity, you need to take risks in order to get pass certain obstacles in life & it shows how committed & ready you are to whatever it is your trying to accomplish.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I go by the name of Kay Zilla I’ve been an Artist/Creator for about 3 years now. I’ve always loved music as a kid & it made me feel at peace. I was born in a little country on the west coast of African called Sierra Leone. I’m sure you’ve heard of the movie Blood Diamonds so u have an idea of the chaos I grew up in. Music was the only thing I could depend on to give me peace. So as I got older & migrated to the United States, I found myself falling in love with music all over again. Only this time i felt like I had to tell my story through music. Most people know about Blood Diamonds but know nothing about the country & the people. So my music is consisted of real war stories from a war child. I’m traumatized but grateful to be alive & have the opportunity to tell the world my story.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s funny because I actually have a cousin visiting me right now for a week & I’ve been trying to be a great host. I’ll just tell you where I took him & keep in mind, he’s here with his wife & sister. I took them downtown Phoenix to show them around the city & then we went off to Mill Ave to get something to eat.
Day 2 I took them to Scottsdale.
The girls shopped around for a while.
Day 3 I took them hiking on 7st. & Peoria.
We got something to eat at Texas Roadhouse for dinner & had some drinks at the Airbnb afterwards.
Day 4 I took them to K1 speed racing & there was good & drinks there.
Day 5 is the last day so we’re just hanging out listening to music drinking & talking about business collaborations.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout-out to my late cousin who was my right hand & best friend. He kept me motivated through the tough times & helped me realize my creative capabilities. He was killed 3years ago & it was devastating. It was hard to keep creating without him but I learned to celebrate his life & bring him to life with my creation.
