We had the good fortune of connecting with Kellin Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kellin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose to be a professional singer songwriter and musician because, to put it in simple terms, it was what I was best at, & what came most naturally to me. My parents were both artists as well, but had conformed to the more traditional work force when I was young in order to support my brother and I. While they remained as artistic and creative as ever, I saw the toll working for someone else had on their soul and creative muse’s. I was always taught that one of the main purposes of life was to find your calling, and simply follow it. I felt like I found my calling at a very young age, and it was through music. Looking back, I guess it was kind of inevitable that I would be called to make music for the world given most of my family members were also musically inclined, but whether it was a calling or conditioning, I followed my inspiration because it was who I was. It was like breathing for me, thus I pursued it because I felt I personally had no choice but to do so.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a singer-songwriter and musician, so my art is through song. What sets me a part from others? I guess my dna…other than that, I am just like everyone else, flawed and all. I am a mom of 2 children under the age of 5, and I am battling some ppd, and ppad, while also trying to re-start my music career. I had to take a couple years off in order to be home with my children, and I began to lose my sense of self a little through this process. I am also a part of “the Sandwhich generation”, and feel an innate sense of responsibility to helping to take care of my aging parents. This past year has got them hard, & it got so challenging at one point, that I sort began to fall apart and crumble under the pressure. Luckily, with the help of my village and more importantly, my sweet husband, I was able to crawl out of my hole and slowly put myself back together and begin making music again while still taking care of my family, without sacrificing my sanity. Boundaries are a magical thing! I had to learn the hard way that if you aren’t nurturing yourself, and setting personal boundaries to protect your mental health, you will eventually break. I got to where I am today in my musical career by constantly putting my art first, and subconsciously nurturing myself through that artistic vs family balance. When you have kids, suddenly, one side of the scale feels much more vital and important and you just forget about the other things you need to maintain the healthy balance in your life.
Before I had my second child, I was juggling many jobs to sort of keep a financial balance present. Aside from music, I helped my husband to establish a wildly successful film acting school and audition taping service in our town, that is coming up on its 9th year in business this June! I still help maintain that business and love being a part of that business and watching it continue to grow.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh goodness…this question is tough because I am only just now beginning to climb out from under my mom rock😅…so my answer to this would heavily be persuaded by which best friend came to visit, and things I know they would love- that said however: I would most likely plan a pretty low key day, since anytime away from my household is best spent chilling out. I would probably start the day with a short walk/hike, followed by yoga in a quiet spot in Montreat led by my dear friend and yogi master, Katie Hay. Then we would have some breakfast at one of my favorite breakfast/brunch joints in town…either La Guengette in Black Mountain NC, or Sovereign Remedies in Asheville. Then we do something spa oriented like, massages or hydration therapy or pedicures! And if it was the time of year when my badass, inspiring friend Jessica Tomasin throws the truly life changing festival, Connect Beyond, I’d bring her to some of the panels, movies or events being showcased that day. Then we would likely end the day with a movie or a concert at rabbit rabbit. But I like to go with the glow so much, who knows- that may be the agenda, and we may end up just sitting & talking allll day instead 🤪 (especially if we hadn’t seen one another in a long time)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have several folks who I would want to recognize in my story…but I’ll try to be conservative. My family is obviously one of the biggest factors in all of this. They support me and my dreams which is not an easy thing to do, but they’ve found a way to do it. My licensing company, Evolution Music Partners and Christine Russel specifically. Christine brought me into the evolution family in 2010 & helped me make my musical pursuits more financially sustainable. Al Moss, is a radio promoter who truly believed in my music and really went to bat for me on so many levels with the release of my last full length record. And lastly, Wayne & Sheri O’Conner have been helping to encourage and support my business since I was 16! They are primarily based out of Canada, but work with artists internationally, and have been very instrumental in helping to facilitate many fruitful connections and opportunities for my career as well. Currently I’m working on my new material with a truly wonderful human by the name of Adam McDaniel at a truly beautiful studio in Asheville NC called Drop of Sun Studios.
