We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor with WorldWide Entertainment TV’s brand success is adapting to the always moving forward entertainment industry. You need to keep in touch with trends and also understand sustaining your roots of why people continue to watch your product.

In this business, once you realize there are ups and downs, you can remain steady in knowing that some days you can catch lightning in a bottle and other times you fall with a learning curve. Consistency is key and being a brand that you can count on for content is important.

So the key to the success has been about connecting with artists and entertainers and entrepreneurs from different parts of the world trying to get exposure and reporting of their events or projects.

What should our readers know about your business?
We started out with promoting and managing Toronto hip hop acts in our original incarnation on our old Youtube channel. At the time we just wanted to get the music online for people to have an option to listen and watch. This was during a time when no one knew exactly how big Youtube would actually get.

As things changed from the early days of how Youtube worked with copyright issues and things of that nature, we ended up learning from mistakes to grow with rebranding and new Youtube launches due to legalities and the new takeover from Google.

What changed the game for WorldWide Entertainment TV is the time we expanded from Toronto to other regions in the United States such as New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Going across seas with a United Kingdom arm truly provided us with that worldwide theme that we came known for. We have helped with artist getting into other regions and setting up shop such as Tara Lord from Toronto to the United Kingdom. We were instrumental with our WorldWide Entertainment TV United Kingdom team setting up a concert tour for Toronto rapper Robin Banks. With the success of these two artists, major artists such as Drake started to follow suit with touring in Europe with the likes of Pressa.

We were able to do this with the help of Youtube at the time when they created the Youtube studios in those regions. WWETV was able to interview artists from those regions live and in person. In Los Angeles, our biggest interview included the co-star of the Tupac Shakur biopic “All Eyes On Me,” Dominic Santana, in the weeks leading up to the movie premiere.

In Atlanta, our host Ms. Goldi was able to get into contact with the other co-star who portrayed Tupac Shakur in Demetrius Shipp, Jr. Ms. Goldi was instrumental in WorldWide Entertainment TV becoming the media sponsor platform for the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center For The Arts in Atlanta. The owner Jim Burnett who bought the land and property from Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, wanted us to help bring awareness to the plans of building a new statue and continuing the legacy Ms. Shakur wanted for the city.

As stated above, in terms of ups and downs, it was great being the platform that broke news with TMZ about the Tupac statue, but it was also a down when legal issues arose with higher ups beyond control of Afeni Shakur and Tupac Shakur. It was a fun time however as we interviewed some of Tupac’s family and had artists coming from around the world to be interviewed at the Tupac Center.

One of our biggest interviews included Akon when he toured in the United Kingdom. He was launching a new music label at the time called Konvict Kartel and we had the first interviews with his new signees at the time. Our forte of covering live events caught the attention of the promoter of the tour.

We have been doing coverage for live events and been sponsors for concerts in Canada, United States, and United Kingdom. In Toronto, we have sponsored many events that include TDot Fest, Youth Fest, and other various live events that included the historic Canada 150 event celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday. At that event, were able to capture a historic Drake appearance and provide the only coverage of the legends from Canadian hip hop such as Maestro Fresh Wes and Michie Mee performances. The icons who paved the way for the likes of Tory Lanez and The Weeknd. We have also interviewed these artists in the past.

We have appeared on television outlets such as CTV’s ETalk when we covered the MuchMusic Television Video Award ceremony from the Red Carpet. At that event we captured footage and pictures of celebrities such as Amber Rose, Desiigner, 5th Harmony and Gigi Hadid. Another historic event we captured in the 6ix included The Raptors NBA Championship parade where got photos and video with Drake celebrating with Raptors on the parade run.

One of our strengths is helping artists at the start of their career and giving them a platform with interviews and special event coverage such as Pressa of BFR at the funeral of his close friend Wassi. and Cash Money Record artist J Soul’s contract signing with Birdman. At the same time we also pay homage to the veterans who may not have received their flowers from the mainstream press.

The latest big event we had exclusive VIP access for was Rolling Loud Toronto. Brooklyn Tea Talk was on sight for Tory Lanez listening party for his last album. It occurred soon after his live performance in front of his home crowd and she also had backstage access to report on the event.

Over in New York, we captured the historic 20th anniversary concert of The Ruff Ryders Reunion with DMX, Eve, and The Lox. We had red carpet access that we shared other prominent media organizations such as BET Networks, The Shaderoom, and TMZ. When DMX was making his comeback, we also had behind the scenes VIP access for his One Music Fest in Atlanta. Our Toronto host DT The Artist has also visited Atlanta and met hip hop legends such as the “King Of The South” T.I., DT The Artist is also the only host to have worked in both the Toronto and New York Youtube studios for interviews.

In Los Angeles, we were able to cover iconic events such as BET Awards weekend, LA Soulfest, and more. For example, the first time Cardi B ever performed her first classic hit, Bodak Yellow, we captured. We were contacted shortly after by record executives about it due to them wanting that first live performance to be done on television months later for the BET Hip Hop Awards. Eventually we worked things out to where we had it air on Apple TV and Roku.

That same year we had been contacted about our content for streaming on Nu Television Network. The outlet at the time had struck some deals with Apple TV and Roku and we had a weekly show airing as apart of their programming.

The drawing card we gave Nu Television Network was our entertainment interviews and live event coverage that was varied in pop culture. We had Caribbean events from Toronto such as Caribana that is now known as Toronto Caribbean Carnival and other events that would not get airtime.

Things became a bit difficult when Covid-19 hit as social media platforms started to censor topics and also everyone was worried about the outcome of things. We no longer could cover live events because of lockdowns and quarantine which slowed down some of our content.

On the other hand, the Youtube channel and website were booming due to people being at home and wanting to be entertained. As previously mentioned, topics that were okay beforehand, now became targeted by some of the social media outlets.

Due to our reach in the tens of millions on Youtube, some of the topics that got covered such as the Black Lives Matter issue at the time with George Floyd, brought some attention that in hindsight hurt the brand in terms of attracting viewers that were not our target audience. This caused a termination of the original channel that we had of over 40,000 subscribers and over 33 million channel views in September of 2020.

It was a big blow to lose all those viewers and subscribers, but we started from scratch and have roared back to getting 17,000 subs at the moment in our second big relaunch of WorldWide Entertainment TV Media on Youtube.

Learning from the previous relaunch from the “Youtube Apocalypse” of 2008, we were able to still have a presence online with the website that was still growing as we started to reupload some classic content.

We had the same issue with our original Instagram account of 25,000 followers being removed due to a copyright issue with CBS Television in 2021. However, we had a social media game plan with IG where we had multiple accounts that represented the cities we were covering and was able to adjust that loss as well.

We have overcome these challenges because we love the entertainment business and some days are not easy, but we carry on. The key is persistence and consistency as we know from over the years many celebrities, artists, and other media platforms have been watching our brand. That keeps us going as motivation that we inspire others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, speaking from the city of Toronto perspective, you have to visit the CN Tower and experience the iconic view of the 6ix from that locale. Ontario Place is another spot that is nearby to the Tower which can be apart of your voyage in Toronto. Visit “Little Jamaica” for Caribbean culture and best time of year to be in the city is August 1st weekend when Caribana occurs.

New York City you must visit the Empire State building and Coney Island for fun and scenery.

Atlanta is a nightclub renaissance and the “City Lights Night Tour” is something that one can book that covers you for the places to hit at night.

Los Angeles speaks for itself as it’s Hollywood lol.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A big shout out to everyone who has helped with the brand in the United States such as Ms. Goldi in Atlanta in New York and in Los Angeles with Miaira Jennings, who is now the head of leading E-How website.

In United Kingdom a special thanks to Ryan Lord Of Top Secret Records, Gary, Tony TNT, and camera man Jay for their efforts and contributions across seas.

In Toronto, all the artists who have supported the brand from its inception and the creative hosts such as Brooklyn, DT The Artist, Xentury, and Pretty From Da City with live events and podcasting.
