We had the good fortune of connecting with S.K. Patrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi S.K., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked at two different banks for over six years. One during college and one post college. During the pandemic and as children had home school, it reminded me that financial literacy was lacking in public education. I decided to write a children’s book about the basics of spending and counting money. I followed up with an activity about banking. I found a gift and a lane that I’m passionate about. I hope to spread knowledge of banking to kids around the country.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have six years of banking and journalism background; I decided to combine them. Chris’s Candy Store Adventure started during the pandemic and as children had home school. Financial literacy is lacking in the public education curriculum. I write children’s books about financial literacy. They include the basics of spending and counting money. I followed up with an activity about banking. The activity books includes bank terms, definitions, crosswords, facts about money, seek and finds, coloring pages, and more. And my next book will focus on budgeting and money management. For the next generation, successful money management and financial literacy are building blocks . I’ve read for classes, conducted workshops, and spoken about self-publishing a book. I found an artist that brought life to my story. I then go to a print shop and work with them about production. I took a week-long trip to Las Vegas by myself to work on my book. I was in my hotel room with no distractions from family and friends.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
UnderTown Bar, From The Rooftop, Melindas Alley, Dwntwn, Bar Smith
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my Grandmother. She was my first friend and told me all the time that I was destined for great things. She installed belief in me that was different than my parents. I listened to everything she told me. Without her, there would be no me.
