We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin McKamey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over the last few years, the world has seemed more unbalanced than ever before. We have found that creating a life of balance has often been a real challenge. Many people assume work/life balance means their time is balanced between their work life and their real life, but I’ve found that the amount of hours spent or invested is not the crucial measure.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes and serious unbalance along with it. Some people who used to spend too much time at work, found themselves quarantined at home trying to teach their children subjects without proper knowledge or tools. Others were forced to spend even more time at work because they were considered Essential Workers. Medical Professional especially worked even longer hours, and some were unable to return home and see their family for months. Still others were isolated by themselves and unable to feel the warm touch of their family and friends.

If anything good came from the pandemic, perhaps it was the fact we were finally confronted with the reality of the lives we had been living before the pandemic. Some of us found new enlightenment while in the midst of the combination of overwhelm and quarantine. We saw with clarity that the health of our family and friends was far more important than a 25 cent raise. As the pandemic went through cycles of “return to normal “and “wait not yet” some people decided to reset their priority on their whole life not just their work life. They simply decided to resign from the jobs and careers they had so diligently worked at for years. Some joined the “Great Resignation” while others found more rewarding work they could do from the comfort of their own homes,

This “Great Awakening” and the “Great Resignation”, have given us time to carefully consider what does balance mean to each of us. This is a crucial point. The definition of balance is actually defined by the individual who possess it.

In my life Balance is more about achieving a level of presence in each area of my life. When I am at work, I am present and focused on the tasks required. I am not distracted worrying about what is going on at home, because I know I will be fully present with my family members when I arrive home. Being full present in the moment means I am able to give my full attention to those that are with me. I can really listen to them and understand what they are saying. Since I am fully listening, the other person feels heard. They understand they are important to me, because I am giving them my time and attention in a quality manner.

Perhaps you have heard the phrase “quality over quantity”. The quality of the time invested with others is what is most important. Genuine conversation, real feelings being shared, and how you show the other person they have high value are all attributes of being present with them.

So allow us to challenge each of you to determine what work/life balance really means to you. When you do have your definition be sure to stay congruent to your values and definition. You will feel balance when you are living your life based on who and what is most important to you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Norterra shopping area and the Westgate area near the Cardinal’s Football stadium are two of our favorite places to go. Spring Training Baseball games in one of the 10 major league ballparks are also a great time for those visiting the Phoenix area. Of course during the MLB season the Arizona diamondbacks games in downtown Phoenix are a fan favorite, and the Western Conference Phoenix Suns command great attention during the Basketball Season. WE love to take our grandkids to the Phoenix Zoo and the Odessa Aquarium also.
