We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, what do you attribute your success to?
Definitely the quality of production. I bake fresh everyday to make sure my customers receive the freshest cupcake/cake. I know other bakers will bake in advance, and freeze the cupcakes but I just can’t get myself to do this. I’m not saying anything is wrong with it but it’s just not an option for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Comadre’s Kitchen was created out of my kitchen.  We sell unique cupcakes that are fun and delicious for everyone, especially adults.  It’s a different take from the traditional buttercream cupcakes.  The Strawberry Crumble cupcake is definitely the customer favorite and is homemade, and one of our customers favorite toppings. I have come up with lots of different things to cover in the Crumble.  Then of course there is Banana Cream cupcake! Banana Cream is very popular, and a big seller also.   I like to think of my cupcakes as a personal size dessert.  We also offer cakes in some of the unique flavors.

My Comadre’s Kitchen has come a long way in the last 3 years. I’ve learned so many lessons on a personal and business level through My Comadre’s Kitchen but the most important lesson I have learned is to always remember why I started. That lesson has been tested so many times before but was really tested when the restrictions were placed from Covid-19. When the Covid-19 restrictions were placed, I stopped baking and put my focus into helping provide meals to others. While this opened more up coming opportunities for me, I had to remind myself that My Comadre’s Kitchen was my business, and many customers kept asking to place orders, so I started baking again. Business has doubled since then and I was reminded that my business has to be top priority at all times. Putting my business on hold because of the pandemic was short lived. and opening for business again was the best decision I’ve made. Owning a small business means believing in it at all times and never stopping. Find a way to continue your business safely and efficiently but stopping your business out of fear can’t be an option. You have to keep going through the hard times if you want your business to thrive.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Phoenix and the surrounding cities have bloomed quite a bit with new restaurants but Taqueria El Fundador is definitely a place to eat some amazing food and has been in business for 35 years. When it’s time to hang out and catch up, I would recommend FairTrade Cafe for the cozy atmosphere plus great coffee and treats. If my guest is lucky enough to be in town during a weekend that Mujeres Mercado is open, that would surely be a stop! The trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the best takeout pop-up hosted by Sabor A Mi and My Comadre’s Kitchen.. it’s the only place you can get great food and dessert all while supporting local vendors.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been blessed with so many supporters on this journey, and each chapter has someone different that has been there to help me through it. However, I do have to give a huge shoutout to my daughter Abrianna and my husband Juan. I don’t know what I would do without them. Those two go through all the ups and downs with me but never let me give up no matter how many times I get frustrated! Sabor A Mi definitely deserves a shoutout for being by my side these last few months. Sabor A Mi had a vision, and when the time came to move forward with business ideas, we both went all in. When we first set up on our own to sell our products, we had no idea if one person would show up but they did. My customers look forward to Sabor A Mi’s delicious food and their customers look forward to my cupcakes. I can’t let this opportunity go by without sending a special shoutout to Joey from Taqueria El Fundador. Joey has given me so much support, mentorship, love and encouragement to continue to grow and open business opportunities. When a business supports small businesses like mine, it shows us that we are all in this together.
