We had the good fortune of connecting with KP Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KP, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Dance has been a part of me even before birth, my mom would play music while I was still in the womb, and I would start kicking and moving. Dance is my lifeline. Dancing allows me to express who I am and how I feel about the things around me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Dance is my passion, but I am diverse in other areas of artistic expression, which I believe is what sets me apart from others. I love to express myself in dance (ballet, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, etc.), runway and print modeling, and cirque arts (Lyra, dance, and silks). I believe that my experience in each helps me become a well-rounded artist. Since I was a little girl, I have always been determined to master each goal I set, which wasn’t always easy to achieve. However, with hours of hard work and dedication, I have been able to master many of them, which got me to where I am today. Though I love what I do, it has not always been easy. I am a perfectionist, which is both a good and bad trait. At times I have to step back and reevaluate if my goal is realistic and what I need to accomplish it. During my years in dance, I have learned that I can not limit myself strictly to this art form, which is why I venture out to activities such as modeling and cirque arts. Also, exploring other areas of art allows me to bring a unique style to my dance.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit, I would take them to La Jolla beach in California. There we would enjoy our days soaking up the sun, laughing, and exploring. First, we go to La Jolla’s secret tree swing that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. After enjoying our time there relaxing, we would go exploring the area for unique shops. We would also spend our days goofing around on the beach, swimming, and learning to boogie board. I also believe that nice picnics on the beach are a great way to spend our time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My whole family has been my personal cheerleaders. They are there for all my accomplishments and all my struggles. They have always ensured that I had endless amounts of love and support, along with professional training. I would also like to give credit to my dance instructor/ dance mom, Nicole Lake. She has been encouraging, teaching, mentoring, and loving me for the past eight years. Nicole allows me to have artist freedom and encourages me to venture outside of the studio to try new things such as silks, tumbling, and modeling. Without my family, Nicole, and my dance family at Studio 21, I would not be the dancer, model, and young woman I am today.
