We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, how do you think about risk?
It sounds clique but I truly believe with out risk, there is no reward. My whole career has been about taking risks, from quitting my full time job to pursue photography full time, to establishing my style and esthetic, creating art for MYSELF, and what my creative passion thrives. I wouldn’t be where I am today without taking some risks, and making mistakes, but choosing to harvest that fear into being better, and growing, instead of letting it cause me to retreat back to a comfortable state.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Once I realized this hobby was so So much more then just that, I knew I would need guidance in becoming the photographer I envisioned. I immediately invested in myself, and education, with some of the most inspiring photographers! I didn’t want my work to be perfect, everyone smiling at the camera, hair perfect, matching clothes, because that wasn’t really life. Real life is perfectly imperfect, I wanted my work to create memories, capture emotions, capture our children how they truly are, whether it be wild and crazy or shy and loving, I wanted to capture each stage how they truly are because one day they won’t let us cuddle them, they will be “too cool” they won’t need mommy’s kisses to make the pain go away, I didn’t want to just capture a pretty picture to hang on their walls, I wanted to capture moments, and the visible love between a mother/father and their child. Because one day all they will have left of us are memories and PHOTOS! My journey was NOT easy, there was a lot of self doubt, and comparison, but once I realized I needed to stop comparing my work to my idols, and become the best version of myself, everything fell into place. One of the best compliments I received was when someone told me they could tell my work from others without even looking at who posted the image. Because I created such a unique style for my brand that it stood out from others!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I am definitely more of a homebody, but Arizona is SO beautiful, so taking in the gorgeous landscapes would be at the top of my list! Lost Dutchman State Park, or Papago Park. Spending a few days in Sedona, visiting wineries and exploring the beautiful red rocks!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Most importantly would be my family, my husband and my two children. They are my why, behind everything I do. It was the love of my children that made me want to document and freeze each and every stage. My husband’s support on what started as a hobby is what kept me pushing and learning and growing and for that I am beyond grateful.

Also all my incredible mentors, from MacKenzie Pudenz, Kayla Locke, Stormy Solis, Theresa Sherron, each one poured their heart and soul into teaching, and creating incredible content for others like myself to learn, and grow, and become successful! I wouldn’t be the photographer I am today without their support!
