We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Hess and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyle, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
My most important value is treating others with respect. We are all different and unique in our own way and there is no place for hate in my life. It takes too much energy and is so draining to carry hate and anger around all the time. Be happy and treat others as you would want to be treated.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Sugar Bar is a craft beer & wine taproom & bottleshop that also has it’s own candy store. We wanted something unique & thought this was a fun take on a taproom. We wanted something that encouraged families to come hang out. The parents can have a couple drinks while the kids enjoy the candy & snacks that we have in the shop. We also have a ton of games for families to play like connect 4 & trivia. I think the biggest thing that sets us apart is our tap & can selection. We have 31 taps & over 280 cans in the fridge. We have a ton of beers that people have never heard of before that are very different. As I’m typing this we received a Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Rice Crispy Treat Cream Ale. Aside from everything listed above I’m most proud of the people that work at the bar. We have awesome people and a positive environment. We guarantee every time you come to the bar you will be greeted by a friendly face & we will do everything we can to ensure you have a good time & leave happy!

We are only about 9 months into the business so far & it definitely hasn’t been easy. This is our 1st time in the beer industry & we have learned a ton since we opened! I think the best way that we have overcome the challenges we faced is by learning & adjusting on the fly. We try thing & see if they work & if they do, awesome we will keep doing them. If not, we learn from it & move forward. The whole time trying to keep a positive attitude & remembering that our people & customers are the most important part of the business & no matter what continue to treat them right!

I think the main thing I would want people to know about our business, is that you are welcome here. There is a lot of hate in the world & we want to be a place of positivity. Come in, be yourself, treat others with respect & have a good time!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from Chandler I am definitely biased towards Chandler based businesses! Of course I would tell people to come drink at The Sugar Bar! 🙂 But aside from that, I would also recommend San Tan brewery for both beer & food. The Perch is also a really cool spot with rooftop views & birds! I have to throw Elmers in my recommendations because you can’t say you’ve really been to Chandler without a visit there! For breakfast I would highly recommend the Downtown Chandler Cafe, they make some amazing food!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife & my son are my main reasons for everything. My wife was the one who had the courage to push us to do open The Sugar Bar & try to build something of our own. My son is my main motivation. I want to build something that can help him later in life.

With that being said we also have an awesome support system within our family. Two of our bartenders are my wife’s sisters and they have been so supportive. They have gone above and beyond in helping us not only behind the bar but with many other aspects of the business. We also have a humongous support system in the East Valley. We have lived in Chandler for almost our entire lives. We went to school at Chandler High. We have had friends, teachers, coaches & all kinds of other people from throughout our lives support us during this journey.
