We had the good fortune of connecting with Kylie Bokenfohr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kylie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I believe in order to be good at something, there needs to be a high level of passion there. Photography has always held that for me. When the world shut down with the pandemic I was definitely lacking passion in my daily life. So I decided to take a leap and start my own side business. A place that would be mine. A place that I could create. A place that during a session I could escape reality. Having those moments of joy really helped me see the positive in a world where we are constantly being shown negative.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started out with landscape photography which stemmed from my love of travel. I loved being able to capture a moment that held such a strong memory. It is a tricky business to be in though because everyone has a phone/camera in their hand now. So you have to put in the work. You need to find ways to get noticed and bring in clients. I think something really important to remember is stick with your vision. Don’t change the way you do business because its what you think others expect from you. When you stay authentic, people see that and want to support it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I had the best time doing a couple day solo road trip to Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend & Sedona and I would LOVE to take that trip with my bestie. You have to do both upper and lower Antelope Canyon. Sunset at Horseshoe bend is an absolute must. Bring a snack and a bevie and just sit and watch in wonder. For Sedona, pack those hiking boots and know your alarm clock will be going off early to beat the rush. There are so many great hikes there, you definitely want to get a jump on the crowd.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can’t thank my family and friends enough for their encouragement when starting this business. It is amazing how little things like sharing posts to big things like referrals, modelling and helping decorate for sessions make this journey so much better.
