We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyndel Shalaè and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyndel, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art has always been a passion of mine ever since I could remember. It has allowed me to express myself when I would not necessarily have the words for my thoughts or feeling. Being able to share my work with others is something I hope will inspires them to peruse something they love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I Initially began my career in the arts as a fashion designer when I launched my clothing line, Manikyn Apparel 10+ years ago. I was able to contribute to Arizona’s dance community and did several local fashion shows as well as taking on styling gigs. After hitting a rough patch in that career and my personal life, I took a break to focus on working with at risk youth. This is when my passion deepened to get back into art, igniting a commitment to artistic expression through my first love of fine art. Something that sets my art apart from most is the way I merge painting with acrylic and wood burning together. A significant amount of inspiration draws from the richness of black culture. This is something I showcase on a small scale and large scale, which includes murals. It has not been an easy road to build an art business and I’m not where I want to be with it. However, I am happy with the work I put out there and appreciate the people who support/invest in my vision. For those in the arts It is important to continue believing in one’s self, not compare yourself to others and keep pushing through to achieve your dreams. With each piece, I hope to inspire and evoke emotions, leaving an indelible mark on those who engage with my art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If speaking local I would take them to downtown Phoenix to check out all the art in the Roosevelt area. There are several cute shops and great places to eat with a diverse group of people. Then I would have to take them to my favorite place to travel in Arizona, Sedona. That is a great tourist destination with several amazing things to do. However, to me it is also a peaceful place to center and take much needed time for yourself.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person that has supported and been by my side every day for the last 4 years of this journey is my wife, Megan Shalae. Art is something I’ve been doing long before us but she has helped me believe in my ability as an artist and perusing it as a career. Although she is not an artist herself, we have been able to come together to collaborate on the vision of pieces. That is a connection that I value and appreciate.
