We had the good fortune of connecting with Laria Herod and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laria, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Honestly, I had already started my “business” before I realized that what I was doing was a business. After becoming a parent, trying new products and sharing those that enhanced my life was an unconscious hobby of mine. I would often make social media posts about these things and as I was doing this, my sister encouraged me to start a blog because people were so interested in the products and services that I was finding and sharing. I started receiving DMs and emails from companies because they loved my posts and offered to give me more products in exchange for continued social media reviews. The requests continued to grow and I was loving all the new things that my family was being exposed to. Eventually, companies started getting more competitive and offering more in exchange for my opinions. It was at this point that I realized that there was a legitimate demand for the service that I was providing. I decided to pour more energy into what I was doing to turn my hobby into a source of income to provide my family with more experiences. It’s been such a whirlwind journey and I absolutely love what I do!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I enjoy telling people about what I do because it’s so unique to me. I graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2020; so, I am a veterinarian. I started on my journey as a blogger turned influencer turned content creator while I was in veterinary school because I was having a hard time managing the stress of being a full-time medical student, mother, and wife. I spent the majority of the day learning about veterinary medicine and the majority of my evenings pouring into my family, but I needed something in the middle to allow me to tap into all parts of me and express myself. It was not easy getting here because veterinary school is extremely challenging, especially while trying to raise a child. I learned that there is power in sharing your truth and that everyone’s story is important. I learned that sharing my journey was not only therapeutic for me, but inspirational and entertaining. I want the world to know that Squally Muffin was created to be raw, unfiltered truth in this family’s walk through life and it has been such a joy nurturing that!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We like to take people out to eat when they visit our city. One of our favorite places to take people is LoLo’s Chicken & Waffles. We also like to go hiking if our visitor is open to exploring the great outdoors.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to should out my sister and my husband. My sister is who encouraged me to start a blog and when I was being hesitant, she helped to lay out the foundation so I could focus on the writing and social media part of it. She also was instrumental in us deciding on the name, Squally Muffin after my daughter’s nickname. My husband has been supportive since we started this journey! Whether that was listening to me talk about my plans, posing for content, or running errands to help me be better prepared, he has always had my back and been willing to help me do whatever I needed him to do.
