We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Vázquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m originally from the land that’s the major producer of olive oil. From a land where taking a walk can be a sensory therapeutic experience: from vibrant citrusy notes of orange blossom to calming lavender and delicious, herbaceous rosemary. I still remember very vividly the scent of jasmine and magnolia flowers in my mom’s small but beautiful garden. A little oasis she built over the years. But not only the plants and flowers remain in my head. The different aromas that traveled through my parents’ kitchen’s air were also some of my main inspirations along with our family trips around different parts of the peninsula. My early exposure to these botanical and culinary scents and mixtures along with future travels abroad have provided me a foundation that I later developed in my little sanctuary in Tucson, AZ, my lovely home now, where I belong. Here, I experiment with natural scents and ingredients to help my community with my high-quality skincare creations. Now…Can you guess where I am originally from? It is located in the Iberian Peninsula…It is a Mediterranean country….It is…..SPAIN! 🙂
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
RELAXLANDS focuses on the natural approaches to niche skin care and beauty in a sustainable way. Our products are vegan, unique, carefully handmade with love, cruelty-free, parabens and sulfates free. We are a culturally-minded company and we like sharing our cultures through our skincare creations. We encourage everyone to set the mood and infuse their skincare routine with positive affirmations to help restore their mind and their energy while they achieve healthy, radiant skin.
We customize our products and we make variations to please different members of our community. We love exploring different ingredients and enjoy sharing their heritage and their history so that our customers learn about their benefits and how other civilizations used them before we did. By doing so, we encourage our community to learn about different countries and lifestyles.
Being where we are right now has not been easy and it requires a lot of hard work as you can imagine, but we are growing and we are enjoying the journey. Challenges are overcome with patience and perspective. Taking time off and reflecting is essential to understand how to proceed and which direction to take. Having a growth mindset and a willingness to gain knowledge helps greatly as learning never ends 🙂
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When friends and family come to Tucson, we take them to the Mission of San Xavier del Bac and we love taking them to Mount Lemmon, and to different museums in town like the Tucson Museum of Art . For drinks and food, we like going to 4th Avenue and Congress St. We always choose places that are pet-friendly as our hairy son, Kiko, always comes with us. I think Tucson is a perfect spot for self-care and relaxation, so I would recommend getting a facial at Real Beauty or at Tashiology Skincare. I would also suggest getting a body massage with Adrianne Asta (Your Partner in Healing) or at Bodhi Blanco. Also, who doesn’t like getting their hair done before going out? My favorite hair stylists in town are Angelica Montejano (Lushlocks by Angelica), Catrina Turner (Whiz Bang) and Amanda Martínez Kelley. I love cooking, and I’m an advocate of the Mediterranean diet. I’m currently working on a new culinary business adventure with desserts typical from Spain, I will keep you posted 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Enrique, who is the co-founder of RELAXLANDS has been my biggest support throughout this journey. My friends in Tucson (Jaime, Grant, Uma, Linda, Abigail, Mel and Yari, etc.) and my family and friends in Spain have loved our products since day one. I’m eternally thankful to Tierra Owens (model, Dj, owner of “Shop Desertd”, and designer), who always helps me spread the RELAXLANDS love, and who has been a great brand ambassador along with Tessa Burton (model), and Parisa Zahedi (model, owner of “Shop Tough and Tender”, and stylist). They give us amazing feedback, tips, and share their passion for RELAXLANDS. Thank you, Ana González (owner of “Pecado no comprar”) and Alba Ortega (hair artist and stylist) for our fruitful and meaningful conversations about life and business. All our customers deserve recognition as well for being extremely supportive and for believing in my craft. I constantly engage with them, especially through IG to ensure that they enjoy their new products. They are truly the best, and I genuinely care for their wellbeing.
