We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Goslin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
At first, not much! I began my blog as a way to record recipes and bond with other at-home moms, as I was newly at home with two young children. After a few years of consistent posting, however, I began working with various brands that aligned with what I was doing, including oatmeal products, a local Arizona morning show, and a publication called Gluten-Free Magazine. It was awesome, because I was just doing what I loved and making money for it!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always loved to cook and bake. As a kid, I followed my dad’s lead, who was an awesome self-taught cook. The big turning point in my adult life was developing various health issues, including Lyme disease, that hindered my eating. I developed tons of food allergies, and I had a strong intolerance to sugar, which prompted me to get more creative in the kitchen. Those issues underlie the type of recipes that are on my blog, which include a lot of lower sugar recipes. Food blogging was easier in the beginning, but it has become somewhat of an industry now, so it is a difficult area to compete in. I’m a bit luckier, in that I’ve been around for ten plus years, but it’s still a struggle. What I hope is to help others who are afflicted with any type of chronic illness or are looking to eat a bit healthier. Sugar is in EVERYTHING these days, and if you have any type of health issue, it’s so detrimental to healing. It took me a year or two, but gradually, I actually retrained my sweet tooth, so that I enjoy eating low sugar treats! I have a chocolate mug cake on the blog that is actually called Bitter Chocolate Cake, and it’s one of my favorites.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ha, so, I’m quite introverted and don’t get out much, but I’ll try here! I’d definitely take them to get some good Mexican food. Guadalajara Grill or Mi Nidito used to be good, though admittedly, I haven’t been there in a while! I loved the table side salsa aspect at Guadalajara. I think taking in a show at Gaslight Theater would be a fun evening outing, and for the afternoon, a trip to Agua Caliente park for a picnic would be nice! We’ve taken our kids out there a few times, and they love it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband! He has supported me from the get-go, in fact, the blog is named for his love of eating oatmeal with a fork! He encouraged me to buy ‘whatever I need’ to learn and grow the blog. He, more than I, understood the need to invest before seeing a return on that investment. I was always scared of taking the risk. My kids deserve a shoutout as well, as they are good sports about taste testing and giving honest feedback on recipes.
