We had the good fortune of connecting with Lilach Mazor Power and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lilach Mazor, how do you think about risk?
Risk is opportunity. In the face of the fear that accompanies risk, I focus on the excitement, the opportunity to create, doing something new and the end goal. Taking risks played a big part in the evolution of my life and career. From seeing how far I could stretch my parents’ and teachers’ patience when I was younger to moving to the United States on my own at 22 and, ultimately, venturing into the cannabis industry before it was the cool thing to do, I have always been one to push boundaries. I jumped into cannabis in 2010, when no one wanted to invest, partner or even work for us! The risk of going to jail for working in cannabis was a real one and it was all self-financed. It was as risky as they come. I dream big and thrive in uncomfortable, stressful spaces; risk-taking is in my DNA. I’ve learned from my mistakes to surround myself with people who get my personality and are happy to join the ride, as well as the invaluable protections provided by great attorneys. I am the entrepreneur that will jump off a cliff trusting they will assemble a plane on their way down. It is not a smooth ride, but it is totally worth it!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Giving Tree Dispensary is an Arizona-licensed vertically integrated cannabis company. Not exclusively a retail location, The Giving Tree Dispensary has 15,000 square feet of cultivation and extraction, which fuels both retail and wholesale sales. Since opening in 2013, The Giving Tree has had continued success and growth and has developed partnerships in Puerto Rico, Israel, Ohio and Arkansas. We have two brands under our umbrella: Kindred Cannabis (@kindred_grown), a cannabis lifestyle and product brand which aims to bring people together through cannabis while evolving the image of the cannabis user, and Katatonic (@katatonic.co) , a high-quality concentrates company focusing on cutting-edge technology and innovative craftsmanship. You can find our brands at over 60 stores in Arizona. Our products are all cleanly grown and produced right here in Phoenix. Our brand growth has been such an amazing experience! I love creating brands that have a purpose and really help people improve their lives. We are a small, independent business and have the only female-majority owned cannabis license in Arizona. We place a strong emphasis on corporate citizenship. My goal is to make a difference within the company, the industry and the world. In the past seven years, we have raised over $95,000 for various charities while completing countless volunteer hours. This year, our efforts are focused on the National Brain Tumor Society; with the help of our partner brands, we will start fundraising in October 2020, and plan to match every dollar raised up to at least $10K. We will participate in the non-profit’s (virtual) walk in December 2020. Join us! Being a start-up company in a start-up industry has its own set of challenges. There are no experts, few established best practices and we’re learning from our own mistakes. As a federally illegal product, we are challenged at every step, including advertising restrictions, banking, taxes, capital raise etc.; even the current government COVID assistance was not available to us. Despite those obstacles, I love what I do because I know we’re changing history!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I feel very fortunate to have such an incredible family. I was raised by parents who are loving, caring and hard working. They made their four daughters believe we could do whatever we set our minds to! They taught us the value of standing up for ourselves and being independent. My parents have always supported me, even when I made it hard. They even thought starting a cannabis business in 2010 was cool when no one else did. My sisters deserve credit, too, as I stole much of their share of my parents’ attention throughout my teenage years, yet they’ve always been my biggest fans and best friends. My own family is co-captained by my husband, who helps me make the impossible possible. He encourages, calms and supports me. The most dynamic part of my support system is my group of friends, professional gurus in their own careers, and a great time on a Saturday night. They let me pick their brains on topics ranging from the personal to professional. I consider them my cabinet of advisers; they offer the best advice, inspirational thoughts and creative solutions. Lastly, much recognition is due to audiobooks and podcasts. They’re the source of endless inspiration, where I learn from fantastic entrepreneurs about their journeys. It’s been the best way to get through the roller coaster of entrepreneurship!
