We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisette Luna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisette, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from California, I moved with my family to Arizona at the age of eight and have been living here ever since. Some years after moving, we lost my dad and our family of 5 became a family of 4. My older sister and brother are both 10 years older then me. So at a very young age I had to learn to be alone while my mom worked to keep our family going. I loved art, it was my one way of feeling whole when my heart was so broken. My Dad was my biggest fan for everything I did including art. So painting and just getting creative made me feel closer to him. I feel like I had the same brain as him always thinking outside the box. So as the years went on I keep slowly teaching myself and my skills continued to grow and flourish. I became an art instructor in 2017 with a local painting company for about 3 years teaching art classes. Once the pandemic hit I was left with nothing but myself and my years of teaching myself to paint. So with the support of my family and the drive to become a full time artist. Custom by Luna was born. My Dad left my family the Luna Name so to keep him close to me and I used that to fuel my Art. It inspires me to find the light in the darkness just like the moon. It shines in the night and brings light to the darkness all around it. So my art does that in its own way, it’s beautiful during the day and comes to life at night.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My drive to create new unique art to bring more color to this world! The beauty my art holds to be seen and admired during the day. Helps with the magic I try to bring to my painting at night. The beauty that people see in the moon at night was the same beauty I wanted for my art. I want the world to know there is beauty everywhere you look no matter if something seems to be in the dark, you can always find the light. There always a rainbow after any storm and to strive to push to see the good in all the darkness. So I encourage myself to try new and unique techniques to create art that is as unique as me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely bring them into my life of as raver is my favorite! I would bring them to a show introduce to the PLUR culture and the love of EDM music. Along with the love of music, the rave scene definitely has a special love for my unique art. I was lucky enough to join the Relentless Beats Team in AZ where I’m a live artist at their EDM events. So bringing friends to work with me is always fun! After enjoying the show we would go to my favorite spot to eat Cheba hut a 420 inspired subs shop. Then we will just hanging out by the pool, enjoying the sun food and good friends all around.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my family and close friends! (They know who they are) because without their support to back me up, I wouldn’t have thought everything I’m doing would be possible. From coming to my art events to buying my art everyone in my life that loves and cares about me has been by my side along the way. And to my Dad a special thanks because missing him makes me wanna work harder for my dream. I wear his Luna name loud and proud and I know he’s looking down smiling at me from above.
