We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Chappie-Zoller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
After years of grinding away at “job-jobs” – you know, the ones that pay the mortgage and provide a regular paycheck and a Monday through Friday routine – I was fortunate enough to come across a business development course offered by our state arts council and written expressively for visual artists, which helped me find my way as a small business owner in the creative sector.

Although the timing seemed right for me to pursue my art career, I didn’t realize then how much I didn’t know about what art I really wanted to make. That in itself has been a journey of self-discovery and introspection, but now I’ve found my authentic artist’s voice. Along the way, I’ve learned to show up, manage my focus, do the work, and most importantly, to trust the creative process.

I also know I’ve always been an optimistic and hopeful person, and I’d like to believe my love of this life comes through in my art; its common denominator is that what we have in common is much greater than what divides us.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is unique in that it incorporates my love of train graffiti, along with my love of horses, our Montana wildlife, and my western American landscape.

Right now, I’m most excited about recent opportunities in which I was invited to participate in a show at the Bozeman Art Museum, and two plein air events this summer.

I also have a piece juried into the C.M. Russell Museum’s fundraising auction in August – a major regional art event in Montana that’s been a “bucket list” item for me for several years!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d be sure to see Tippet Rise, an outdoor sculpture and music venue, plus our annual summer art and music festivals. I never leave Montana in the summer, because it’s really “The Last Best Place” to be in the West!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Number One Supporter for me has always, without fail, been my husband, John Zoller.

From when we very first met, almost thirty years ago, when I’d lost my way in Life, he told me I needed to be doing my art, and would take me to galleries even before I was painting.

Since then, he has supported and encouraged me throughout my art career journey, helping me at shows and providing moral and emotional support all along. There’s absolutely no way I’d be where I am without him.
