We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Ferree and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We had been collectors for years. I’m always looking for ways to save a buck so I started looking into how to get wholesale pricing on some of the items we regularly purchased. I got a business license and started seeking wholesale contracts. Instead of buying 1 action figure, I would buy a case of them and sell the extra ones online. Once I started doing that, I was able to keep 1 item out of a case for myself and end up making money on top of it. Once I realized how easy it was to make a profit and do something I enjoyed at the same time, I was hooked.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a brick and mortar retail / collectibles shop & specialize in collectibles & toys from the 1980’s to now. We sell stuff that you typically won’t find in the large retail stores and get new inventory almost daily from buying collections or taking in trades. There were a lot of financial risks to get where we are today. When our hobby went from spending a few bucks here and there to ordering $50,000 truckloads of preorder merchandise, things got very stressful, there were many sleepless nights. There have been times that I may have taken on more than I should have. When we first started, I was also working a full time job in finance. Juggling that and the shop at the same time probably shaved a few years off of my life. For a couple years I was working Monday through Friday, going into the bank super early on Friday to get my 8 hours in before 1130 so I could get to our shop by noon. We were originally only open Friday – Sunday because I wasn’t completely comfortable with leaving my regular job. We had a lot of people complain about our hours, not realizing that I was actually working 7 days a week for about 2 years straight. It took a lot out of me at the time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We live in Lake Havasu City, AZ. This is definately a tourist spot year round. Every summer we get flooded with visitors from all over the country to enjoy our lake, desert and visit the London Bridge. We have several great restaurants, a couple of our favorites are A Place To Be and Chicos. A Place To Be has some of the best home cooking I have ever had outside of my moms kitchen. PZA makes wood fired pizzas that are the best pizzas that I have ever had on this side of the country.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife for always supporting and trusting my financial decisions and encouraging me to grow our hobby into a business.
