We had the good fortune of connecting with Ludo Smolic and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ludo, why did you pursue a creative career?
I think that art of all kinds is very specific to humans and how we perceive the world and emotions around us. That kind of idea has always spoken to me, so I’ve always had a heart for doing art even as a hobby. It just made sense to take what means so much to me and try to pursue art as a career, and I’ve been working towards it since high school. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else, art will always be a part of my life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve fought hard to be able to do art in my every day life, and took a lot of risks deciding to dedicate more time to art professionally. I’ve struggled with mental illness and , like everyone, faced a lot of hardships in life and art has been a way to express my feelings about it all. It’s been a slow process getting to where I’ve been, but it really lies in self care (whatever that means to you) and to not rush anything. You just have to stay steady and have a good core belief and love for what you do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I live in Tucson so of course we would go down to Fourth Ave and check out all that she has to offer. There’s no lacking of interesting and artistic shops down there, especially the &Gallery. To wrap it up I’d love to go to some of the bars and have a few drinks ( shout out to IBT’s and The Surly Wench). Otherwise, going out hiking anywhere to sightsee and be in the desert is always great. Just, you know, bring a lot of water. I’d probably like to take a trip up to Phoenix and visit Kei Collective as well, always amazing to see what kind of goods they have in the store.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Really all my success goes to my best friends Angel, Seda, Rhys and Gina because without them I wouldn’t be here at all, and they’re the ones who have been there for me through the hardest parts of my life. They all continue to push me to do what I want in life and their support has been everything to me.
