We had the good fortune of connecting with Mackenzie Ehlers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mackenzie, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I’ve always considered myself to be a go-with-the-flow, “free spirit” type of personality, and that was a big motivator in pursuing a creative career! However, I have found over the years that I actually do need structures and boundaries in place in order to succeed. This was an important lesson to learn because once I started implementing more of a regimented schedule (something I had avoided for a long time), I found that I was much more effective in my business. Now, my morning routine is one of the most important parts of my day even though it was a phrase that I once rolled my eyes at. Ultimately, boundaries have ironically allowed me to have more freedom and creativity as a whole!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always loved the art of lettering, and I tried my hand at calligraphy while I was at college studying graphic design. I loved everything about it, and it evolved into a variety of products that I would make and sell. A few of my friends got married in that time period, and I readily helped with some of their wedding items – invites, signage, etc. Before long, I found myself knee deep in the wedding industry and I haven’t looked back since! Nowadays, I create custom designs for brides… whether it is bespoke invitations, 8 foot seating charts, place cards written on salt shot glasses, etc. It always looks different and that is why I love it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Gosh there is so much to do here! There would definitely be a lot of eating… Saba’s, Windsor, Snooze, and Rice Paper are a few faves. I also really love going thrifting and antiquing, so I would take them to the antique stores on Cave Creek, or on 7th ave. Twigs and Twine is another fave to find some unique home pieces 🙂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always have to shoutout my sweet husband, Josh! He is a constant encourager, supporter, and source of laughter in my life. Also he deals with all the messes I make with my job, and literally follows me around with a vacuum cleaner haha!
