We had the good fortune of connecting with Mallika Malhotra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mallika, what is the most important factor behind your success?
For so long in my business, I spoke to too many people, had too many offers and claimed too many skill sets. I refer to this time as my messy, “junk-drawer” brand phase. The pivotal moment in my entrepreneurial journey was when I stopped trying to please everyone and committed to a niche. Once I understood my zone of genius and narrowed my focus to brand strategy and mentoring women in business, my messaging and offers became more clear and consistent. My business skyrocketed once I specialized in my brand.
What should our readers know about your business?
My name is Mallika Malhotra, The Brand CEO. I’m on a mission to empower women to unleash their strengths so they can lead with confidence and achieve success.
People come to me when they’re frustrated with feeling invisible, tired of playing small, and exhausted chasing after clients. Together, we dig deep into their story, discover their magic, and build a brand that has clients banging down their door.
I’ve been in the business of branding, advertising, marketing, and entrepreneurship for over 3 decades. During that time I’ve:
* Managed corporate advertising for global brands such as L’Oreal, Oil of Olay, and Clorox
* Launched and grew a successful photography & branding business that has helped hundreds of women across the country
* Been voted Top 25 Leading Women Brand Builders of NJ
* Authored The Brand Photography Playbook
It wasn’t that long ago that I too was on the business-struggle bus. I was doing all the things ranging from family photos to headshots to Instagram workshops to brand strategy. No one knew what I was an expert in because I was too scared to commit and narrow my focus.
When I decided to leverage my strengths, focus on my expertise, and commit to my special sauce (aka niche), my business did a 180.
I stopped serving everyone and stopped offering all of the things. I got strategic, became a specialist, and got visible. That’s when my brand gained serious traction as the go-to in my industry.
Now I share this wisdom and experience with other women-owned businesses who struggle with how to build their brand. I help them gain brand-changing clarity, build confidence in their messaging, attract quality clients, and get paid top dollar. I offer a high-touch, intimate mastermind for women entrepreneurs who want to next level their brand and accelerate their brand progress.
When I’m not building brands, you’ll find me reading a stack of books by the fireplace with coffee or red wine in hand and dreaming about my next global adventure. I live in a beautiful Maine coastal town with my husband, 3 sons and mischievous mini Bernedoodle, Jax.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Maine in the summer is glorious! The weather is perfect, the air is fresh and the food is delicious. Get ready for ocean views, lighthouses, lobster rolls and craft beers.
We would start the day with a morning walk on the Falmouth Foreside to see the boats and feel the ocean breeze. We would stop for coffee and tasty breakfast sandwiches at the Town Landing market. During the afternoon, we would head to the iconic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth for photo opps and a scenic walk on the rocks/cliffs. We would have lunch at a local hot spot, Five Islands Lobster Co in Georgetown, where the lobster is so fresh that it’s literally caught that day at their active fishing wharf. Then we would head to my favorite coastal town, Camden, for strolling, shopping, coffee and ice cream. A must stop would be my favorite bookstore, Owl and Turtle Bookshop Cafe. Then we would head back to Portland for dinner and end the day at my go-to restaurant, Scales. The fresh oysters, ramp rolls and pan roasted halibut are out of this world. To end the perfect day, we would head to Luna Rooftop on the top floor of the Canopy Portland Waterfront hotel. Toasting to Vacationland with yummy cocktails and another spectacular view.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My current business coach, Jessica Miller of Jessica Miller Coaching, has really helped me strengthen my mindset when it comes to business and money.
