We had the good fortune of connecting with María José Cortés and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria, how do you think about risk?
Risk has taken a huge role in my life since I started my own business. I had an idea and I took the risk to make it into a brand, I can now say I quit my full time job to solely focus on my business. I carry my candles in 8 stores now, set up at farmer’s markets, and sell my candles online. All thanks to one risk I took.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am extremely proud of the quality of my candles, which are are 100% soy wax, I use natural fragrance oils and a cotton wick, which makes them non-toxic when they are burning. Once I hand pour each candle, I let them completely dry and then I decorate each one with beautiful dried fruits and flowers, which sets them apart from other candles. It has definitely been a trial and error process to get the right scents and consistency but it all has paid off in the end. I have had to learn how to manage my time, especially since I’m my own boss now. I have set a schedule for myself during the week and I also give myself days off because they are much needed! Especially when I have to go to multiple farmers market during the week. I’m now a professional at setting up my stand and know just about all the tips and tricks.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend lives out of town so whenever she visits I definitely look for a farmer’s market, usually St Philips Plaza market. I would also take her to get boba at the best spot in town, Ni Hao Tea, and then go walk around 4th avenue. We have recently gone to dinner at The Monica and at Ermanos. Of course we can’t end the weekend without drinks, we love The Nugget and Portal!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my family and friends, who have been nothing but supportive throughout this process. This includes going to help me at farmers markets, helping me make candles, and always encouraging me to pursue my dreams.
