We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My husband Alex and I have three kids. When our first child was born, our son, we made the decision that I would stay home and raise our children. This is something that I was passionate about, always being there for our kids and have them be the focus. Now that they are older and in school, I am able to focus on my passions all the while showing our kids that mom’s can have something outside of just them. It makes my heart so full because all three of them have an eye for design and are always helping me with ideas or even things they think would look great in their rooms or even clients homes! My girls’ favorite place to shop is Home Goods so they can pick up pretty pillows and accessories for their rooms! I am open to all my clients on the importance of my family so some things may take a little longer because of commitments we have, but they are very understanding and always appreciative of that I think. In fact, there have been several times that we’ve been able to go to job sites as a family and I’m able to combine all the things I love into one thing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would say what sets me apart from others is I like to incorporate what people already have and build on that. I love to find that unique or unperfect piece off Facebook Marketplace or Offerup that would work great in the space and customize or redo it to fit my clients needs. This not only makes their space unique but it is also budget friendly! Not everything in your home has to be from a fancy store. Many times you can style a room with pieces from your own stash of “things”! And you don’t have to have an over the top budget to hire me. Being conservative and budget-conscious as a person, I like to pass that along to my clients. Plus, I truly love what I do and helping people make their vision come true holds a lot of value in my heart. Having a fresh, outside eye come into your space can be just the thing you need to get where you want to be in styling a room that speaks to you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ll be 100% honest, I love my bubble. I live in the area of South Phoenix known as Ahwatukee. Everything you need is here or just right over the freeway! But if friends or family are in town, I do love to show them some of my favorite places outside the Tukee! For a relaxed evening, we love to hit up Hillside Spot, which is a great neighborhood restaurant and cute little patio for some yummy food and a nice glass of wine. It has a Sonoran-style menu and sources most of their food from local vendors! During the day, we can go on a hike off the Warpaint Trail on South Mountain. Here you can take it easy or go hard. It’s endless and everyone you pass is so friendly. For some shopping, I love to head over the freeway to Chandler and go shopping at Found or Potato Barn. Both stores are full of unique nick nacks and furniture for the home and anything would make for a great gift to take home. And something we discovered this past year as a family is horseback riding! We went out to Koli Equestrian Center in Chandler. It was a blast and we were even able to take my sister and nieces out when they came to visit this past month from Iowa. It’s now a must do for any of our visitors! In general, Arizona has a lot of beautiful places for a quick adventure and we’ve been lucky (or unlucky) to explore more of them this past year with COVID limiting travel. Being a farm girl from Iowa, it took a while for Arizona to grow on me but it definitely has and it’s a very beautiful place to explore.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout definitely would be to my husband. I am so lucky to have someone by my side that supports me in finding my passion and working on it slowly but surely over the years. Also, my friends and family. Many of them have used my business for their home styling needs and I always feel so special when they value my opinion and pick my brain for ideas and solutions. And last but not least, my three babies, my son and two daughters. I have seen them beam with pride and tell their teachers or friends what I do which melts my heart.
